Our advocacy is working.
After sustained pressure from advocates and survivors across the country, Ohio's child marriage ban legislation has been scheduled for a Senate Judiciary Committee vote this Wednesday, a major step toward protecting minors from child marriage.
Last week, we joined @UnchainedAtLast, fellow advocates and survivors at the Ohio Capitol, where our Director of Policy demanded "Today we are asking Ohio lawmakers to do something simple. No loopholes. No exceptions. No excuses. Pass SB 341 and set the marriage age at 18, period." Lawmakers listened.
We'll keep fighting until every child is protected.

Conflict and disaster make girls more vulnerable to child marriage.
We must work to provide greater protection to those at risk in humanitarian settings.

Ohio has a bill to ban child marriage—18, no exceptions. Strong bipartisan support. ZERO opposition. Not one person. Not one organization.
And yet the Senate Judiciary Committee hasn’t brought it to a vote.
We're asking Ohio legislators: If no one opposes this bill, why won't you vote on it? @OhioSenateDems and @OhioSenateGOP.
Ohio's girls have waited long enough. Pass SB341.

Mr. President, Daylight Saving Time forces Americans to wake an hour earlier than Standard Time and does not create more daylight. Permanent Daylight Saving Time would make winter mornings dangerously dark, with some sunrises occurring as late as 9am. For the sake of public health, safety, and better sleep, please restore permanent Standard Time!

Oklahoma legislators are pushing to end child marriage—but one lawmaker opposes it, citing "parental rights."
Child marriage traps minors who are too young to divorce, access shelters, or sign leases. This is about protecting children from exploitation.
Thank you @HamiltonSD7 for your leadership on this. We encourage @kylehilbert and OK House members to support this critical legislation.

Child marriage is still legal in 34 U.S. States. @FraidyReiss and @UnchainedAtLast have been indefatigably working to change that painful reality.
I’m proud to join Fraidy in co-authoring this op-ed about the fight to pass legislation banning child marriage in Colorado, and the surprising opposition SB 48 faces.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read and share:

@CherokeeOwl Age of consent and legal adulthood is 18. Should be 18, no exceptions.

In 1937, a small town in Tennessee saw a marriage that would shock most people today. A 22-year-old man, Charlie Johns, married 9-year-old Eunice Winstead in Sneedville. At the time, child marriages were still legally allowed in some places under certain circumstances. After this, Tennessee Changed the Age to 16yrs for Marriages.
Imagine hearing about a wedding today and discovering the bride was only nine years old. The ceremony happened, the community knew about it, and life went on in that era very differently than it would today.
Looking back at moments like this reminds us how much laws and social norms have changed over time. What was once legally permitted in parts of society would now be considered unacceptable and illegal.
Today we would call this abuse. Does the age of consent depend on physical & mental maturity? What Do you think the minimum age to marry should be?

@mohhamedmuderer @Adasochy @_alice_evans One is too many. There is no reason why we should not fight it anywhere it is happening. Just want to remind folks it doesn’t just happen in these other countries. It should not happen anywhere.

@AbeilleCombs @Adasochy @_alice_evans There are 38 million child brides on Bangladesh and 19 million in Pakistan. Please show me where that's the same amount or even 1% in the US.

In Northern Nigeria, where child marriage is pervasive, girls are at risk of "obstetric fistula".
If a girl becomes pregnant before her pelvis is fully developed, then labour may be obstructed. The baby's head presses against the birth canal for hours or perhaps even days, cutting off blood supply. When the tissue dies, a hole forms between the bladder and vagina.
In the aftermath, she continuously leaks urine - for the rest of her life.
The smell usually means stigma and divorce.
Nigeria registers about 12,000 cases per year.

@_alice_evans @naomirwolf We need to end child marriage in America too. It’s still legal and happening in 34 states. It was legal in all 50 states until just 2018 when Delaware became the first state to outlaw any marriage before age 18.
English

@imfrekebenson @_alice_evans Yup, still happens in America too. Legal in 34 states. Until 2018 it was legal in all 50. Spread the word so people know. It doesn’t just happen in those “other” countries.
English

@_alice_evans Child marriage is one of the most stupid thing I know, I mean even animals wait to become adults
English

@Adasochy @_alice_evans Ban it in the USA as well. Still fully legal and happening in 34 states.
