"calories not carbs" they say people love to cite fatty organs (ectopic fat) as causing insulin resistance & diabetes sure, fattened organs = metabolic dysfunction. no argument there. but WHICH foods drive overconsumption? nobody binges on butter & steak. nobody binges on eggs & vegetables. but flour → pasta, bagels, cookies, cakes? demolished. potatoes → fries, mashed? gone. add sugar + a little fat? forget about it. remove the starch/flour? suddenly overconsumption becomes VERY hard. this is why ad libitum low-carb studies consistently win - people naturally eat less without trying. the "overconsumption problem" isn't solved by obsessing over some arbitrary calorie number. it's solved by removing what triggers overconsumption in the first place. yeah some people handle carbs fine. cool for them. but for MOST people? carbs = the on-ramp to overeating & ectopic fat accumulation.

This was Dr Sunny Kaler (UK Forensic Psychiatrist) yesterday talking about how he reversed his mental health struggles with a ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet for mental health is coming. Science is playing catch up.

Not over stated if you consider that conventional treatment of diabetes actually fills people up with sugar - internally - and thus, they die early. Many people still consider diabetes as progressive but we've known how to reverse it for 200 years. I'll be talking about this and how low carb is the most studied diet on the planet at today's @PCLifestyleconf

Thought for the day! Just possibly overstating this but at least it’s clear! Sugar: empty calories and addictive too ! ⁦@garytaubes⁩ ⁦@thelowcarb_rd

Problem is they don't want to prescribe monitors for those who 'don't need them' but I think they should, since monitoring educates a patient knowing what impact food has on their BG. I buy my own CGM, so what's it to him 😠 😡

What are your thoughts #lowcarb #DiabetesManagement practitioners? If a pt is being proactive and monitoring their BG when guidelines say they shouldn't what would you argue. I think brilliant, raises awareness and better management. Got told off by my GP for using a CGM 😲

Low carb diets throughout history: 1797: Dr. John Rollo pioneers a meat-based diet for diabetes. 1825: Jean Brillat-Savarin's low-carb book is published, allowing fruit. 1834: Sir William Bardsley advocates a carnivore low-carb diet for diabetes in his "Essay on Diabetes." 1850: Dr. Apollinaire Bouchardat publishes a book on fasting and low-carb diets for diabetes. 1863: William Banting popularizes a low-carb approach for weight loss. 1873: Dr. Frederick Pavy publishes a book on low-carb diets for diabetes. 1882: Dr. Wilhelm Ebstein releases his LCHF (low-carb, high-fat) book. 1896: Dr. Arnaldo Cantani recommends a low-carb diet for diabetes. 1911: Dr. James Salisbury publishes a meat-based ketogenic diet for various conditions in the book "Principles of Dietetics." 1921: The ketogenic diet is introduced for epilepsy treatment. 1927: Dr. Elliott Joslin's diabetes diet limits daily carbs to 100g. 1953: Dr. Alfred Pennington advocates a keto diet for obesity. 1972: Dr. Robert Atkins releases his book, popularizing the Atkins diet. Yet why doesn't the establishment at least offer it as an option to patients? They don't even mention it.

"Low carb isn't sustainable" Meanwhile I'm 5 years deep and my 70-year-old patients are crushing it at year 2. @AKoutnik published a case study after 10yrs low carb and @lowcarbGP has patients that are multiple years in too in primary care. Skill issue.

@LynetteBateman1 @AbilitiesB can help. She's a qualified Dietitian, has been doing low carb with patients for years and has a program you could join. She also has a FREE WhatsApp support group that I moderate in. Tahira her name is. I'm sure she'll reply later today 🙂

A low calorie ketogenic diet can reverse diabetes in 3 months (no meds) whilst eating solid food Bet your doctor/dietitian never told you this was an option

I never planned to be the dietitian talking about low carb 🤷‍♀️ But life had other plans for me: IBS → obesity → pre-diabetes → fatty liver → mental health crash In 2020 I did a desperate mind mapping session to try to find ONE thing I could do.. ..which led me to take a gamble on low carb. Fast forward to now: Low carb reversed it all. Now I'm the dietitian other dietitians whisper about 👀 Every year I get healthier / leaner / mentally sharper doing what I'm doing though. If that makes me the odd one out then so be it.
