@skdh Creating enthusiasm for science means creating enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge; nothing wrong with that.

the goal of science communicators should be to communicate science, not to "create enthusiasm"

@skdh Since he was the one who was angry with you, it was okay for him to do it. But if you would have been angry with him, then he wouldn't have had the right to demand from you to simply forget it and move on.

I once had an argument with a friend who literally didn't talk to me for 2 months and then insisted we meet to clear things up. So I'm sitting there all pumped and ready to argue and he just says "Let's forget about this and have a coffee," and that was the end of the story.

If you have a leadership job, then you also have a kindness job. Yes, there is work to get done and goals to meet. But we also have a responsibility to leverage our authority and decision making capability to uphold human dignity.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to grad students is something that I learned from my time as a competitive swimmer: It's natural to want to see how fast others around you are going, but looking around slows you down and ruins your form. Focus on your own goals & time.

@jonathanbfine That's a great way to look at it! I never thought of it like that before. Makes me less resentful of others' achievements and keeps me positive and hopeful for myself. Thanks for sharing this perspective!

Best advice I got in grad school was not to be angry when someone got something they didn’t deserve but instead to be hopeful that I would get something better that I also didn’t deserve

Generally what kind of questions are asked in a postdoc interview, especially in the area of theoretical physics? @AcademicChatter

Looks like at least I did. Even though it's been a couple of years since I defended my PhD thesis I still get badly triggered every time I think about my PhD supervisor's evaluation of me and me work. 😢 It was the most demeaning thing I've ever read in my life!

It's not okay to offer funding where the recipient uses their own money first and is reimbursed later. This puts serious pressure on those in less privileged positions. Many struggle (silently) or lose out completely. Reduce inequity by offering resources up front.

When you call a man who has raped someone "she" it is not a neutral act: you are adding insult to one of the worst injuries a person can endure. I'm begging you: stop it.

Having a code of conduct and diversity initiatives is meaningless if you won’t take action against bullies. It’s actively harmful to bring people from minoritised backgrounds into an environment where you will not support them. This will not be a safe environment @SVP_vertpaleo

@RajRajRajP Oh, so those who ignore my emails don't actually forget about them? Really? I thought such people easily forget about my email after choosing to not reply.

Too many manchildren in academic faculty positions. Just because they can do research, it doesn't mean they can manage and supervise people. The consequences of their immaturity, petulance and mismanagement are dire. They should be held accountable for their misbehaviour.

“Rights aren’t pie - you don’t get less just cos another group is given some”. But the trans lobby isn’t really asking for the same rights as the rest of us. The trans lobby is demanding that the resources women have carved out for ourselves be reallocated to male “trans women”

@DianeLangberg When God is all-powerful why does he allow suffering?

When you sit with someone who is suffering, grieving, sorrowing, you are sitting face-to-face with a grief that your Lord has carried. There is no tragedy—or sin for that matter—that you will encounter in another’s life or in your own that He has not borne.

Suffering rarely makes sense. Suffering is unreasonable; it is irrational. Still, we work very hard to make sense out of it. I often think that the ability to explain suffering is the clearest indicator of never having suffered.
