Breaking: Iran’s Regime Moves to Execute a Female Protester Bita Hemmati, a young Iranian woman, is reportedly at imminent risk of execution by hanging alongside her husband. She was arrested after taking part in the nationwide anti-regime protests in January, part of a wave of demonstrations demanding freedom and basic rights. According to reports, Bita Hemmati is being held in Evin Prison in Tehran, a place long associated with political prisoners, torture, and forced confessions. Like many others, she has been denied due process and access to a fair trial. Her “crime” is demanding FREEDOM. In just one week, at least 11 men have already been executed. Now, the regime is turning its machinery of death toward women. Hundreds of women are currently imprisoned. Many are under torture. Many are facing long sentences. And now, execution. Where are the voices that claim to defend women? Where are Western feminists leaders? Why are you silent. A massacre happened in Iran and many of you were silent and now your voice can save a life. Iran deserves freedom from oppression and a democratically elected government. But Trump has repeatedly said his goal is stopping nuclear weapons—not regime change—so I worry the West may abandon the Iranian people again

I’ve been going to the Ladies all my life. I have never known nor ever cared about whether the women who were in there with me were born that way or not. I am willing to bet that until this confected moral panic about trans women (why not trans men) nor did anyone else.

@glosswitch She's so young, just a child herself and clearly frightened. Infanticide a much more appropriate charge. There was another case recently in the USA where the girl was 19 and on a murder charge. She too was clearly scared of her mother but seemed completely unremorseful in videos

This is an incredibly sad case. I do find it quite hard to understand why many feminists can rally round re the criminalisation of a late term abortion but not find a murder (as opposed to infanticide) verdict disturbing here. theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j…

If you’re sending me a paper from 2006 I suggest you have some catching up to do. Yes, I’ve read most of the literature. Followed the debates and been discussing the issue on here for nearly a decade. I’ve also followed the policy debates, and know many trans people (some that I agree with and some that I don’t). I also understand the science. Next.

People often ask me why I’m so invested/interested in the trans issue? My response is always the same; given the attack on women’s rights, the rejection of the science around biological sex, the idea that people can change sex, the ludicrous notion of the female penis, the pressure put on lesbians to sleep with biological males, the distortion of language, and the inherent authoritarianism, why aren’t you invested/interested?
