@dfkodsi Even an AI wouldn't characterize a movie where a women turns dudes into pigs, a cyclops bites people's heads off and they go into Haides as "sterile and bland". Especially considering much of it was done with pratical effects.

In re The Odyssey: What everyone is missing is that it is a boring, sterile film with awkward dialogue (even when not spoken by the incompetent Tom Holland), whose deepest emotional note is angst, just like every other Christopher Nolan film. Nolan is a technically proficient but unintelligent director, hence his well-known popularity among filmbros. Relatedly, the rash of cultural criticism has ignored the film’s cinematography, which could have cued our nation’s best bloviators into what is really going on with the movie, because it is so much of a piece with the rest of it: bland, undistinguished, forgettable. For instance, at my screening—admittedly, not in IMAX 70mm—Odysseus’s massacre of the suitors was distractingly difficult to follow, yet another instance of the apparent contemporary inability to light battle scenes. Christopher Nolan has never been one of our great directors, and with The Odyssey, he has achieved yet another non-breakthrough.
In short, 7/10 – a decent blockbuster. Like every other Christopher Nolan movie. Dont over-think it.

I would sacrifice all of Christopher Nolans overrated "movies" and exorcise Christopher Nolan's Odyssey from public memory for a Sean Bean Odyssey sequel to Troy (2004). The wit, the charm, the honor, the pride. Not with Matt Damon could you do this.

Zeus' Law is like a foundational theme in the movie.
Nolan's style is to show something early in the movie and keep returning to it when new context is added.

The Odyssey really proves movie studios views the audience as midwits (they’re probably right). How many times did Odysseus have to randomly mention “if the cattle or butchered, my men will all die!”? He repeats it maybe 10 times because Nolan knows the audience has the memory of goldfish and will have no idea what’s happening if it didn’t spell everything out to them like babies. How many times did characters blurt out about Zeus law? The audience has to be reminded 500 times to get the point. Everything has to be spelled out to the audience. Odysseus has to outright say the lotus flower is erasing his memory because the audience is too stupid to infer it from the scenes. So much of the movie is boring exposition like this of characters just explaining what’s happening to the viewer.

After watching Nolan’s version completely butcher Greek history, cast zero Greeks, and turn the story into something unrecognizable, this actually feels like a real shot at getting it right.
A proper, no-compromises, historically grounded Odyssey with Mel Gibson at the helm would be massive. If this actually happens, it could be one of the most important moments in cinema’s history.

Just watched Odyssey (no spoilers)
Can someone explain to me:
1. Why Nolan used a biological female as a male character?
2. Majority of the actors were speaking modern English with an American accent. Telemachus (played by Tom Holland) refers to his father Odysseus (Matt Damon) as "dad" 🤦🏻♂️
Troy and Gladiator are far superior films in this genre. I really don’t understand this movies’ hype..
It’s a 7.5/10 for me, worth a watch but not life changing like some of y’all been saying

@19Goldstein84 An R-Rated movie is rarely going to kill it at the box office in comparison to a cartoon or popular super hero movie. In fact the top R-Rated movies by box office haul are mostly super hero movies. One exception: Oppenheimer. Is Odyssey better than Oppenheimer? We'll see.

Nolan’s movie presents the Trojan Horse itself as the original sin that breaks the moral order of the world. You’d think it would be the kidnapping of Helen that started the war in the first place, but no. It was actually the clever trick Odysseus pulled to end the war that ruined everything.
Racked by guilt for violating the rules of hospitality by tricking the Trojans and slaughtering them in an unfair and dishonorable fight, Odysseus wanders the margins of the world until it’s time to set things right and atone for his sin. How? By playing another clever trick that violates the rules of hospitality and slaughtering the suitors in an unfair and dishonorable fight, of course. This sets the moral universe back in order for… reasons.

IMHO, a lot of conservatives are missing the Biblical forest for the woke trees in Nolan's Odyssey. Yes, the casting of Elliot Page is silly and egregious. But here's the thing: Nolan's "The Odyssey" is an apologia for Christian morality poured into a Greek vase. The entire movie is rooted in what Nolan terms "Zeus' law." That law is: "Treat others as you would want to be treated, because anyone might be a god." Now, clearly, there's nothing like that in Greek mythology. It's not implicit in Homer. It's a direct rip from Biblical morality, substituting "because anyone might be a god" for "because man was made in the image of God." Nolan then takes this rule and uses it as his moral glue: the idea is that Odysseus, in utilizing the Trojan Horse, violated Zeus' law and led to full-scale slaughter. That sin has led to the unleashing of broader globalized sin (the "sea peoples" who don't respect Zeus' law and are invading surrounding areas). This is a highly Biblical message: that sin is infectious, and that sin also affects the world at large, not just the sinner. Odysseus has sinned, and he must atone for that sin through self-imposed exile. He must also sacrifice his own aspirations to restore the possibility of a moral universe: because he has unleashed catastrophic violence and violation of Zeus' law -- manifest in the suitors' cynical use of Zeus' law to eat Penelope out of house and home -- he must violate Zeus' law one last time and then accept the penalty, which is exile. This is a not only a movie that will make millions of people go read classical literature again. It also reinforces the idea that violation of the Golden Rule has disastrous consequences. I dunno. I'd consider that, on balance, a large-scale win for civilizational values, when weighed against the woke casting of Elliot Page or the dumbass discussion over whether Lupita Nyongo is good-looking enough (she is, and for the record Diane Kruger is German, not Greek).
