@jimmathesonnhl We're one coach too late for this. The players needed to look in the mirror for the 16 games that got JW fired. They did and it got them to BTB SCFs. They still own some responsibility, but the team got worse under KK. There's enough sample to move on.
English

At what point do we look at the players responsibility here with this constant coaching carousel. Is it always the coach’s fault? I think not
Sid 🇨🇦@NHL_Sid
I think Edmonton's skater group was good enough to win the Pacific and make it to the WCF. The fact it didn't is largely because of coaching, IMO. But, the goal should be a cup, and the roster was far inferior to COL/CAR/etc. Mgmt. has somehow made the goaltending worse. And...
English

@jimmathesonnhl Would you agree that unless you're a truly great coach you have a shelf-life? Probably around 3 seasons worth? And that should be enough sample to know rather definitively whether or not your coach is top class.
English

@KevinMcCurdy @AustinHockeyYT Yeah I don't necessarily disagree with any of this. Especially when it comes to players. But I think the team can be a little bit more aggressive with coaches. Don't you think? There's only 32 of those jobs, not 896

It's more economic than any other reason, what do all of those locations have that we don't. Hot, Sunny, low taxes, limited media scrutiny, limited fan scrutiny. Players line up to play in those environment, and the mgmt of both orgs has damn good analytics to back it up, they basically can and have gone to get whoever they want.
By comparison, we have higher taxes, we're in Canada which is an automatic no from a lot of players, the media and fan scrutiny is a pressure cooker, plus you live in Connor and Leon's shadows, to an extent. Building a team based on vibes is more important, because we can't outweigh a lot of those perks.
Ownership is always afraid of pissing Connor and Leon off too, so everything is carefully curated to maintain balance.
We have to go find the Ekholms (who loves the winters), Hymans, Podkolzins etc. (nevermind the big shots). Guys who absolutely thrive under extreme pressure 24/7, in return for one of (neck and neck with Montreal) the best playoff vibes in the league.

Who CARES about loyalty?! It's about WINNING. Vegas has zero loyalty to players, coaches, etc. and look at their success in just NINE seasons in the NHL. Six Division titles. A Stanley Cup. Gallant three seasons as coach. DeBoer two. Cassidy almost 4 seasons.🤷♂️

English

@KevinMcCurdy @AustinHockeyYT I'm interested in your theory. Is it unwillingness to be cutthroat or is it some PTSD from players not wanting to play here so ownership feels compelled to show loyalty wherever possible?
English

@AustinHockeyYT Were not Vegas or Florida. That mindset doesn't work here like it does in Florida and Vegas. I'll leave it to you to figure out why.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet The 50 game segment in KKs NHL career without Gully or Coffey and his results were bad. The second PC returned they went back to normal.
That needs a real explanation.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet We don't need to be in the room to observe change.
Every team got rest ( and the Oilers best players didn't).
And the sample size isn't small. There's 2 years of Coffey on the coaching staff with the team with a top 5-10 xgf.

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet Every single team got rest...
While it's a small sample size it remains the biggest hole. I was reading your reply ro Sid. That was interesting stuff about B6 goaltending.
English

@AdamRiz @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet Using that 5 gm segment as an argument against KK and for PC is invalid because there were other factors at play (namely rest) and the required information isn't available since we weren't in the room. Also, sample size. Same issues persisted in playoffs with PC on board.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet Like I've been saying, you can't make a claim "KK is a good coach" and completely ignore the counter argument of "If KK is good, why did the team take a quantum leap when PC rejoined?"
I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm genuinely curious as to what that defense would be.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet I'm not ignoring it, I'm asking you to prove it.
It's entirely possible that KK is responsible for any system changes that happened post Olympic break. Prove it though.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet I repeatedly stated they improved pre-TDL, and while it was a small sample they were top 5 in xgf in those 5 games.
English

@AdamRiz @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet You're ignoring the trade deadline additions as being a factor. Three possible factors, and you're choosing to hone in on it being Coffey. And you're criticizing me for not taking analysis deep enough.
English

@AdamsOnHockey Mr Drance has never seen the Oilers pp when 93 gets hurt I guess.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet You lose and you get criticized that's the life of a NHL coach 🤷♂️.
KK is choosing to go down with the SS MacBlender, as is his right, but also getting criticised for going down with SS Conscitency if he so chose isn't a defense.
He could try being a good coach?
English

@AdamRiz @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet I genuinely believe that if Knob had stuck with some consistent line combos and gotten the same team results, fans would've been calling him stubborn and calling for him to try new combos. I don't buy that sticking with one set of lines would've led to more wins.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet You can absolutely tangibly prove Coffey's impact.
Pre-Coffey the Oilers were a mid 20s xgf team, for the 5 games pre-TDL and after they were top 5-10.
So how much credit goes to KK and how much to Coffey?
English

@AdamRiz @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet I didn't go further on that because none of us can tangibly prove Coffey's impact. I wasn't in the room or on the bench. I don't know what Coffey said to the defencemen. I can't say if he did or not impact the defensive results. Nobody outside of the room can.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet Except you're the one making claims, so you gotta prove them or otherwise you're just saying things and your analysis is non-existent.
English

@AdamRiz @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet You're entitled to your opinion. I wasn't in the room, so I don't know what tactical changes KK made or what Coffey said to the D men. Until someone can prove it, PC's presence is just as likely to be the reason for improvement as KKs tactics and adding Dickinson and Murphy
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet You also argue against yourself, like the data you do pull shows the team getting worse every year. And I don't think the teams 7,10 and 11 most used forwards (mostly wingers) in October and November being a rookie is a compelling argument for struggles.
English

@lotsryan @AustinHockeyYT @HeavyHockeyNet Like pull out some video and be like "see this thing that worked? Here's them doing it between Dec 27th and Oly Break"
Or something, because you can't convince me KK is good enough to keep unless you can convince me he was more responsible for the improvement than PC.
