If I wanted to see England decisively defeat France on American soil but go home losers anyway I'd time travel back to the French and Indian War.

Having a mandate to swing big in the offseason, then landing Keegan Kolesar and Daniil Tarasov while your captain maintains a trade demand, and then getting fired in mid-July, is as humiliating of a manner in which a GM was fired for hockey reasons as I can remember.
Elliotte Friedman@FriedgeHNIC

In a major development, the Red Wings announce Steve Yzerman is stepping down as the team’s head of Hockey Operations and becoming an advisor to Chris Ilitch. A search for the team’s next President/GM is underway

@AdamZHerman @CorePython Yes, and it also tells me "don't pay through the nose to keep Noah Laba because he can't play against top competition." This isn't trigonometry. It's basic cost benefit analysis. You pay the guys at the top of your lineup. You rotate out the ones at the bottom of it.

Gavrikov-Schneider logged the 2nd most amount of minutes out of any pair this past season for the Rangers and these were the numbers The eye test clearly showed it too that Gavrikov was left for dead out there constantly when he played with Schneider I can’t believe we have people defending number 4 in 2026

@BlueshirtsBreak If it makes it more clear: 21-22: Nemeth 22-23: Harpur 23-24: Gustafsson 24-25: Vaakanainen

@BlueshirtsBreak Yes, notably I said "heading into the 2025-26 season." As in, these were his most common partners before last season, which specifcally would preclude anything about last season.

@AdamZHerman Your point is also that Schneider spent the majority of last season playing with Urho, which he just didn't. He got the most minutes with Gavrikov. By the looks of it, he had his second-most minutes with Robertson.

@PhilKocher It's just not true. When he played with Gustafsson (conveniently the one puck-mover he's ever been paired with), he excelled.

@AdamZHerman Ifs and buts. We can only work with the information we have. He hasn't had very good partners, but even when he has, he's failed. What does that tell you about his abilities as a player? This is the polar opposite of someone like K'Andre Miller.

@PhilKocher If Braden Schneider was on, say, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and he "failed" playing next to Victor Hedman so they had to move him down the lineup, would he be playing with players of the caliber of Patrik Nemeth and Ben Harpur?

@AdamZHerman Yeah, there's a reason for this — every time he was asked to play up with better players, he failed, and the coaching staffs (multiple) moved him back down to avoid the exposure.

@32NYR K'Andre Miller is a very good defenseman whose skillset specifically caters to playing with a puck mover like Adam Fox. Just pointing to raw xGF% with absolutely zero other context stopped being an acceptable measure in like 2015.

Braden Schneider has only been put in positions to succeed and has been given a multitude of opportunities with multiple high quality defensemen, all of whom got blamed for his shortcomings, and I'm not one of those positions did he provide any semblance of a net positive impact
Adam Herman@AdamZHerman

Braden Schneider is much better than he gets credit for. He was put in a position to fail last season with his usage. He’s also had 3 different coaches the last five seasons who have asked him to play three completely different systems.

@32NYR A wet piece of bread would look good next to Adam Fox. Using that as the basis for any argument here is in bad faith.

@AdamZHerman NST has him as a 48% 5v5 xGF% with Gustafsson. Miller was over 65% with Fox and was also better with Borgen and Trouba than he was with Schneider. The Rangers gave Schneider more 5v5 TOI with each of Gustafsson, Gavrikov, and Miller than they gave Miller or Jones with Adam Fox

@32NYR You're going to want to look back at the numbers here. He absoliutely did control play alongside Gustafsson and Miller's numbers dropped off away from Schneider.

@AdamZHerman He's played over 500 5v5 min with each of our 3 best LHDs over the last 3 years (Gustafsson, Gavrikov, and K'Andre Miller) and couldn't control xGF% with any of them. Played 250 with Robertson, same issue. Hell, even Morrow played better with Gavrikov and yet somehow here we are

“He played with our best LD” is one way to put it. The other is, “he was given the hardest minutes in the NHL alongside someone who doesn’t complement his strengths.”
NoahsNYR@NoahsNYR

@AdamZHerman WHAT! Put in a position to fail? He played with our best LD and sucked, he played with damn near every LD we had in every line and sucked, he played in a sheltered role and sucked. Gets outplayed no matter the situation

I genuinely cannot remember the last time that Schneider got a look in the top-four with a defenseman who can move the puck. Can anyone remind me? I'm pretty sure the answer is "never."
Yup@h0ckeyman1

@AdamZHerman He was given looks with many partners. The reality is the entire team and locker room has been in the dumps for 2 seasons now. There is not one player who was not impacted by that. He’s a fine player, I think he’ll be a pretty decent 4-6 defender in the nhl for years to come.
