As @BitcoinConner has been noting and @bitcoinpolicy has been leading on, the treatment of crypto assets under Basel III is an absolute critical issue. The 1,250% risk weight makes it effectively economical unviable for banks to hold these assets on their books. This ultimately means fewer options for consumers.

FYI This morning the Federal Reserve will release a proposal for revisions to the Basel risk weighting standards. Bitcoin is currently treated as a toxic asset under the Basel standards. A change in the guidance would be a big win for American Bitcoiners. BPI will be in attendance at today’s meeting. We’ll keep you updated on text of the proposal and next steps.

🚨⛈️ SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK EXPECTED TOMORROW ACROSS THE DMV: The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the DC Metro Area to a very rare Level 4 out of 5 risk for severe weather, the first since August of 2023. The greatest chance for storms will be between 12PM-8PM Monday. This will not be a typical severe weather event for the DMV, with widespread damaging to possibly destructive winds and several tornadoes, some of which could be strong (EF-2+), all being possible. Some large hail and very heavy rain will also likely accompany storms. Be prepared for the chance of widespread power outages and downed trees. Several roads may become blocked as a result. Now is the time to review your severe weather safety procedures with families and friends and have several ways to get alerts! Take this seriously! #vawx #mdwx #dcwx #wvwx

I know a lot of people are posting about the joint FAQ issued by the @federalreserve, @USOCC, and @FDICgov regarding treatment of tokenized securities. This is for good reason as this regulatory shift is absolutely essential for broader institutional adoption of tokenized products. Having worked on these issues for many years, I also cannot emphasize how important it is to see a neutral position on permissioned vs permissionless blockchains. And finally want to note that last year’s @WhiteHouse report on digital assets called for such guidance and continues to drive regulatory modernization. Great to see!!! 👏

For the record, @patrickjwitt and the White House team have been absolutely critical leaders in managing negotiations for this insanely complex bill, both from a policy and political perspective. Without Patrick, there is likely no table for all of the parties to sit at.

New: The White House wanted a deal on stablecoin yield done by this weekend. Will that happen? No, a banking source with direct involvement tells me. "Patrick Witt made the unfortunate error of going out to the press and saying he'd get this done before March. It's not going to get done before March," the source said. The crypto and bank lobbies are still far apart on the issue of yield, which is holding up a crypto market structure bill. "Is there language circulating? Yes. Is the language close? No," the source said. "We're not close to a bill." "I think that there's a very real likelihood that this thing falls apart unless Brian Armstrong comes to the table," the source added, referring to the Coinbase CEO, who has been adamant that stablecoins can generate yield for users. The source emphasized that the banks want a deal here, but figure chances of passage could drop to near-zero in the next month.

While much of the DC focus is on getting market structure legislation over the finish line, just want to call out the amazing (and very technical) work that the @SECGov is doing to truly modernize our financial system as we speak, particularly in the area of tokenization. The promise of greater consumer access to financial products and 24/7 trading are coming more into view every day thanks to the work of @SECPaulSAtkins and @HesterPeirce.
