I am deeply inspired by the massive turnout of Nigerians in Abuja as we marked the 2026 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. a true reflection of our shared commitment to unity, wellness, and national development. From the Presidential Peace Walk to the vibrant fitness activities at Eagles Square, the energy and participation reaffirm the power of sport as a unifying force. I sincerely appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support for grassroots sports and youth development, which continues to create opportunities and inspire hope across the nation. Taking the celebration to the IDP Camp in Apo was especially meaningful. Through sporting activities and the distribution of essential items and support, we were able to share joy and restore hope among vulnerable communities. Sport must go beyond competition it must touch lives, unite people, and build a stronger society. As we reflect on this year’s theme, “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” I remain committed to using sport as a tool for peace, inclusion, and national growth.

JUST IN: President Tinubu has requested Senate approval for an approximately ₦9 trillion adjustment to the 2026 Appropriation Bill. This move aims to regularize outstanding legacy capital commitments from previous years (2023–2025) and fund critical national projects without overburdening the new fiscal framework. The proposal seeks to consolidate unfunded obligations particularly about ₦5.7 trillion in capital commitments from the 2025 budget that were unlikely to be executed before its expiration along with an additional ₦2 trillion for priority projects not originally included in the 2026 bill. Overall, the adjustment breaks down roughly into ₦7.7 trillion for legacy regularization and ₦1.3 trillion for new strategic provisions, bringing the total addition close to ₦9 trillion.

I was honoured to join distinguished dignitaries at the opening ceremony of the 3rd National Para Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, where we celebrated the courage and resilience of Nigeria’s para athletes. The ceremony was vibrant and inspiring, with colourful cultural displays and a strong sense of unity. I was particularly pleased to witness the presence of notable leaders including Sunday Dare, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Hon. Bukola Olopade. ACTIVITIES UPDATE The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, @ShehuDikko , made a stop to inspect the new stadium under construction at Igbogene in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, accompanied by officials of the Bayelsa State Government. The Chairman, who had earlier attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility in February 2025 alongside their Excellencies, Governor Duoye Diri and former President @GEJonathan , GCFR, commended the pace and quality of work observed on site. He noted that the progress of the project is in alignment with the Federal Government’s broader vision under the RHINSE framework, particularly in advancing modern, fit-for-purpose sports infrastructure capable of driving talent development, hosting major competitions, and contributing meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s sports economy. The Chairman further disclosed that President @officialABAT GCFR, as part of a broader vision to harnessed the potential of sports economy has recently approved the setting up of a “sports infrastructure development bond” with the goals to harness funding to fast track the revamping, redevelopment, and development of sports infrastructure across the country to align with international benchmarks…

I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling the promises made to our women’s basketball team, D’Tigress. This gesture is a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to athlete welfare and sports development. While in Lyon for the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament, the team received their certificates for national honours and title documents for houses in Abuja rewards announced after their AfroBasket triumph in Côte d’Ivoire last year. The presentation by the leadership of the National Sports Commission and other officials has further lifted the spirit within the team. This is a proud and emotional moment for Nigerian sports. Mr President has shown that sacrifice, patriotism and excellence will always be recognised and rewarded. For too long, athletes had to wait endlessly for promises to be fulfilled, but this administration is changing that narrative. 🇳🇬 I also commend the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their steadfast support and commitment to the welfare of the team. This development will not only inspire D’Tigress but also motivate young athletes across Nigeria who dream of representing the nation. When athletes see genuine appreciation, it strengthens their resolve to keep striving for excellence. I congratulate the players and coaching crew for their discipline, resilience and consistency on the international stage. This moment goes beyond rewards; it represents renewed trust, purposeful leadership and a solid foundation for a more athlete-friendly sports system in Nigeria.

I want to commend the fighting spirit of our senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their spirited 93–86 loss to France at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Lyon. I watched the match live alongside key sports officials, and despite the result, I was proud of the resilience, discipline, and determination shown by the team, especially their strong second-half performance that kept the contest competitive to the final buzzer. Amy Okonkwo led the scoring with 16 points, while Elizabeth Balogun, Musa Mujarnatu, and Ezinne Kalu also delivered impressive performances. I am very proud of D’Tigress. Their courage and belief against a strong French side show why they remain one of the most respected teams in African basketball. I also commend the coaching crew led by Coach Rena Wakama, as well as the leadership and support structure around the team, for their continued commitment to Nigerian basketball. This performance, despite ending in defeat, should give Nigerians confidence as the team prepares for their final game against Germany. For me, the outing in Lyon was a clear reminder of the strength, unity, and promise within this great team.
