The US doesn’t “pay for Europe's defence”. Of a $968bn global defence budget, only $33bn is spent in Europe, mostly on US bases which are not NATO bases. The actual US funding of NATO is approx $600m a year, about the same as Germany. The myth dies on contact with arithmetic.

Winding me up that people are associating Scotland’s qualification with the expanded World Cup format. We won a UEFA Qualifying group and would have qualified for every World Cup since god knows when. We haven’t snuck through a back door, we’ve done it the proper way!
