So let me get this straight… The public are being told facial recognition cameras, Digital ID and eventually digital currency are all about “security” and “safety”. Meaning every payment, every document, every movement could one day be linked directly back to YOU. But here’s the part hardly anyone talks about… MPs and members of the Royal Family are reportedly exempt from parts of Digital ID systems for “security reasons”. So the people making the rules won’t fully live under the system themselves. Ordinary people could end up tracked, monitored and fined through one giant digital network… while the political class sit outside it. And they wonder why trust in government is collapsing.

@SorchaEastwood Sounds good to me - if the government can't do anything it can't do anything stupid and as most things it has done so far are stupid this is a positive result 😂

I'm one Backbench MP. As a direct result of this Leadership shambles, I've had at least one and potentially two Ministerial Meetings cancelled due to resignations and now having to pull out of a Conference on cancer next week due potential votes on Starmer next week. And I'm just one Backbench MP....Can you imagine the impact of this all across Government?

@PhilMyers53 Frightening prospect - if he keeps doing damage at the current rate the UK will go bust - British people will be refugees in other countries. Whatever happened to "Great Britain" - the wonderful land our fathers and grandfathers fought and died for?

I hope the BrItish media takes a long hard look at the chaos they have happily helped to cause. I've lived a long life & never before seen such a disgraceful attack on a legitimate Government & even worse the whipped up hatred of a PM.

You know this country is going down a very dark path when 7 overseas people have been banned from entering the UK. 4K extra police have been deployed some with riot gear & pubs around Westminster have been ordered to close, all for a peaceful demonstration to be held in London on Saturday where UK flags will be flying high. Lots of other protests are held every week now in London & NONE of these measures are taken. This country is starting to feel more like North Korea everyday.

@JuliaHB1 Hey, it's one rule for us plebs and another for the so called government. Get used to being bullied. The word "Minister" is Latin for "Servant" - the meaning got lost along the way 😂

How on earth has Angela Rayner been "cleared" by HMRC? She didn't pay the extra £40,000 stamp duty that was due. She didn't take the specialist tax advice on her flat purchase that she was advised to take. She failed to pay the extra stamp duty that she, as Housing Secretary, had brought in for second home purchasers. For HMRC not to issue a fine means they judged her decision as "reasonable care" having been taken, or it was possibly "careless", but not a "deliberate" underpayment. She clearly did not take "reasonable care" to ensure her tax was correct. And if it was "careless", it was *deliberate* carelessness. Do you seriously think that if YOU underpaid your taxes by £40,000 as the then Deputy Prime Minister did, that you would get away without a fine? Sorry, but this stinks.
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

EXCL: Angela Rayner has been cleared by HMRC of deliberate wrongdoing or carelessness over her tax affairs, paving the way for a potential leadership bid if Keir Starmer’s grip on power unravels. The former DPM has settled £40,000 in unpaid stamp duty, but has not paid any penalty as a result of the investigation. HMRC was also satisfied there was no tax avoidance. Rayner tells me she was “bruised” by whole experience because of intrusion into her disabled son’s personal life, but also because it had appeared as though she was “in it for myself” rather than on the side of ordinary people. Rayner indicated she may run in event of a contest as she would “play my part” and that she understood why Labour MPs were so upset following last week’s election crushing. She said Starmer should “reflect on” stepping aside.

Remember that Reform lost in Scotland. They lost in Wales. And they got little more than a quarter of the vote in England. Labour should get on with governing and changing the country for the better.

@Antipolluters Tough choice. Labour MPs won't want him to call a general election so they will support him, otherwise they will lose their excessive salary and expense package soon, instead of in three years

BREAKING NEWS Sir Keir Starmer’s future will be the subject of a vote in Parliament in an amendment to the King’s Speech. Dave Doogan, the new leader of the SNP at Westminster, said he would force Labour MPs to take a position on the Prime Minister’s job. Mr Doogan said: “This farce has to end now, so Parliament can focus on the issues that really matter. It’s clear the only way that can happen is for Keir Starmer to go. “He has lost the confidence of voters and his own MPs, and there’s no coming back from that. The Labour Party must stop dragging this crisis out and put an end to it now. “If the Labour cabinet ministers don’t have the decency to do the right thing – then Parliament must. Unless they put an end to this chaos now, the SNP will table a motion of no confidence in Keir Starmer to draw things to a close.”

I think that the reason that no one has stepped forward to challenge Starmer is very simple. He has issued an ultimatum - challenge me and I will call a General Election. This explains the initial restiveness followed by the sullen silence in the Labour ranks.

We are delivering on our manifesto and our economy is stabilising. The Prime Ministers global leadership has been excellent. A 5th prime minister in 6 years will paralyse our government and make the cost of living crisis worse. We promised stability and I will fight for that.

The EU re set means more young people coming to UK to find jobs and housing. It means taxes on energy and energy using products, a big increase in costs of student support to help EU students, the loss of large amounts of our fish, and a big bill. It will cut our growth rate.

For all his weaknesses, Starmer has been underestimated. Now he needs to convert his toughness, resilience - even his ruthlessness - into vision and conviction. Get on with improving the country - and tell us how he’s improving it.

Starmer is showing resilience and has a thicker skin than most. Lesser mortals would crumble in the midst of an onslaught from a horrendously biased media and opposition parties with dubious foreign links. I honestly think this is a battle for our democracy.
