Happy International Day of Older Persons! Today is a day for celebrating the wonderful contributions that older persons make to our society. In particular, today we want to thank our Age Friendly Ambassadors who lead the way in making Ireland a better place in which everybody can grow old. Some of our Ambassadors are taking to their local radio stations today to discuss their roles and the important work that they carry out. You can hear them on C103 Cork, Clare FM, Shannonside Northern Sound, Midlands103, Highland Radio, and South East Radio between 9-11 AM this morning!

🏠 Underoccupancy in Ireland vs. Europe: The Hidden Housing Gap Did you know? Ireland has one of the highest underoccupancy rates in Europe — meaning many homes have more bedrooms than people living in them. In fact, nearly 70% of older adults live alone or in large homes that are underused, while younger generations struggle to find affordable accommodation. Compared to the EU average, Ireland's housing is significantly underutilised — a major contributor to the housing crisis that often goes unnoticed. That's where @THEHomeshareIE steps in. We match carefully vetted, responsible young people (Sharers) with older adults who have a spare room and could use companionship or light help around the house. It’s a win-win: ✅Companionship for the householder and peace of mind for their family ✅Affordable housing and mutual support for the Sharer ✅Intergenerational bonding ✅Better use of existing homes, easing housing demand Let’s rethink how we use our homes. Let’s share. 💚 #TheHomeShare #HousingCrisis #IrelandHousing #HomeShareSolution #AgeingInPlace #SustainableLiving #IntergenerationalLiving

As part of the @creativeirl programme, arts facilitator, Rachel Lartey, brought individuals and groups from the South East counties together in an exchange of creative responses to the natural and cultural environment of their riverine and coastal neighbourhood 🌼 The Creative Ireland initiatives were showcased at our Ambassador’s Day, highlighting the importance of staying active in local communities. To learn more about programmes that support active, healthy ageing in your area, contact your local authority’s Age Friendly Programme by phoning your local authority or visiting agefriendlyireland.ie #AgeFriendlyIreland @WaterfordCounci

🔗 Loneliness in Ageing Ireland: What @tilda_tcd Shows Us—And How THE HomeShare Offers Hope Did you know that 1 in 3 older adults in Ireland feels lonely at least some of the time? According to TILDA (The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing), loneliness isn’t just a feeling—it’s a serious public health issue linked to: * Increased risk of depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease * Higher healthcare usage and emergency hospital visits * A 26% rise in premature mortality—on par with smoking or obesity 💡 At THE HomeShare, we see the human side of these statistics every day. That’s why our mission is simple but powerful: to connect older people who may need some companionship or help at home with younger people seeking affordable accommodation. This mutual-living model fosters: ✔️ Daily connection and companionship ✔️ A sense of purpose and dignity ✔️ Increased safety and peace of mind ✔️ Real reductions in social isolation It also saves families—and the State—money. Compared to the €75,000 average annual cost of nursing home care, the HomeShare is a cost-effective, person-centred alternative that delays or avoids institutional care and reduces demand on homecare services. As Ireland’s ageing population grows, we need bold, community-based solutions like the HomeShare that are: 📌 Scalable 📌 Evidence-informed 📌 Human-first Let’s invest not only in longer lives—but better ones. #HomeShare #HealthyAgeing #TILDA #ElderCare #Loneliness #IntergenerationalLiving #SocialImpact #AgeingInPlace #InnovationInCare #ESRI #FutureOfCare #HousingSolutions #Ireland #HealthcareInnovation #thinkhomeshare #togetherhelpingeachother @kodonnellLK @CarrollJennifer @JamesBrowneTD @HomeshareIntl @HomeshareA @HSELive @AgeFriendlyIrl
