During the 1930s, Isaaqs refused to identify as Somali, claiming that prolonged residence abroad set them apart from other Somalis. Arguing that, just as Indians or Europeans who had lived in Africa for generations were not considered African, the Isaaq should not be classified as Somali.
Former Governor of British Somaliland, Vincent Glenday, remarked that “the Isaq have reached the ridiculous position of rejecting their own kith and kin.”
