@canzyD01 Interventions to prevent infections and other complications can start early. And yes there is a cure via bone marrow transplant that is available in Australia too and gene therapy currently in US and other European countries. Even though gene therapy is currently costly.

There is no cure for sickie cell decease. So what is the point of screening for it? So you can tell the parents? And then tell them there is no cure.

In Australia, every newborn gets a simple, free ‘heel prick’ bloodspot test - because catching things early can change a child’s whole future. Now we’re expanding that screening to include sickle cell disease - making Victorian babies the first in the country to be tested. Winnie and Andrew know why this matters. Their little boy Kiki wasn’t diagnosed until he was one. Hospital visits. Endless tests. Fear and uncertainty no parent should have to carry. An earlier diagnosis would have saved their family a lot of shock and trauma. It’s why we’re expanding the program to 35 conditions. Because early intervention saves critical time in diagnosis. It means families can get the healthcare they need faster - and our littlest Victorians can get treated sooner.
