The Odyssey has survived for nearly 3,000 years because form matters: names, speech, armor, hierarchy, beauty, courage, piety, homecoming, and the moral weight of the ancient world.
But when an epic starts sounding like a Marvel trailer, people are right to ask whether the old world has been understood or merely used.
A director can adapt Homer, but adaptation should still carry the weight of Homer’s world.
When I go to see The Odyssey, I am not only looking for a plot. I am looking for the world that shaped the story: its language, honor, gods, rituals, hierarchy, beauty, fear, and longing for home.
If the ancient poem is only being used as raw material for a modern blockbuster, then why call it The Odyssey at all?
Create your own myth. Give it a different title. Let Homer remain Homer.w

Something that happens to me literally every time I'm talking politics with a liberal:
I'll mention that the gun control is a total dealbreaker on voting blue for a lot of people.
They respond with "nobody wants to take your guns, that's just republican fearmongering."
I point out that no, literally every democrat candidate wants an assault weapons ban. That's not some republican lie, it's literally right there on their own issues pages.
Rather than acknowledging that they were incorrect and continuing the conversation from there, they just immediately pivot to "omg nobody needs an assault weapon!"
It's literally like a script, I've had the exact same conversation like 1000 times.

Jeffrey Epstein was a Democrat donor and Obama supporter. Trump and Epstein had a falling out and never spoke after they got in a feud over a house they both wanted in 2004, well before Epstein’s sex crimes were exposed by his first criminal conviction in 2008.
Progressives like to talk about how Trump’s name appears hundreds of times in the Epstein files, but this is because Epstein was an MSNBC-watching boomer lib who was constantly complaining about Trump to anyone who would listen to him whine. There are no communications between Trump and Epstein in any of the emails.
A lot of people seem to believe that the Epstein files contain emails between Trump and Epstein, but this is progressive misinformation. The fact that so many people think this is also evidence of the fact that public perception of the Epstein files is mostly based on memes and people don’t have any idea what the Epstein files are, or what they contain.

I disagree. In medicine, raw scores are very predictive. Low scorers perform worse in residency. However, the typical black Yale med student still did very well and averaged 518. Even without preferences, they met the MCAT averages of schools like UCLA or UCSF.

The Yale medical school discourse is interesting because MCAT & GPA are only part of a med school application. Raw numbers don’t show who will be a better physician. We see this in sports all the time, a QB having more passing yards doesn’t mean they’re the better quarterback.

At first glance, this seems like a division between the working class and the managerial class, but it's not quite that simple. There are engineers and surgeons on the Republican side. What we're really witnessing here is a split between those who work (miners, engineers, surgeons) and those who mostly pretend to work (yoga instructors, film industry workers, social scientists).

This is true. Back in 2004 many of us were fairly critical of Troy going in because we were basing our frame of reference on the great epics of the 20th century to which this was the heir. But then we were very spoiled in those days and didn't know how bad cinema could get.
