I am a parent of a soon to be graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. These times have brought so many challenges to school administrators and most importantly seniors. I would like to give a shout out to the Class of 2020 at The Citadel. Proud of you all!

@TalfordAnderson @georgejroy I agree whole heartedly. In my online classroom, I can even hide the name of the person(s) who are posting. That way there is authentic anonymity which seems to let speak more freely, but with professionalism (a life lesson for high schoolers) I truly support open forums.

@georgejroy #EDTE731SPRING2020 This method creates open forum in communication that allows everyone to express themselves without constraints. The challenge is ensuring that guidelines are followed. The biggest challenge is no direct control over what someone posts on social media.

@Bryent11341275 @TalfordAnderson @georgejroy I often use forums within my students to help ignite in depth discussions. They really seem to engage in debatable questions relevant to the unit they are studying. Which organ is most viable to the human body? Should a patient be told that a health care provider is HIV positive?

@TalfordAnderson @georgejroy That is a great point, I worry about the privacy concerns. Depending on the age group I think using something like Google Docs to collaborate using chat and comment features can help keep things manageable. #EDTE731SPRING2020

@BGa5286 @georgejroy The only instance that I can think of that would cause me not to embrace social media would be having an student. parent, administrator, etc. take a "tweet" out of context. Our current President's social media responses is a prime example.

@georgejroy Social media has many benefits in schools. It lets students interact and be engaged in learning. Most of our students are already using social media, why not embrace it? #EDTE731SPRING2020

@georgejroy #EDTE731SPRING2020 Social Media can be great but also dangerous for young people. Great because you can connect and reach a large audience. Dangerous in that what you post is also how you will be perceived. It is their resume so make sure it reflects their character.

@Miss_Fehlig @CoachRAdrian @georgejroy This is something I touched on in my initial "tweet." I teach students in 9-12 grade and feel that using social media is a great way to teach employable skills like tact and discretion. Its also a great way to show them how negative comments can impact their future.

@BarrackLindsay @georgejroy You have a very valid point. Do you happen to know if your students understand what social media is all about? It could be utilized to demonstrate demonstrate personal traits like tact, honesty, or bullying.

@georgejroy #EDTE731SPRING2020 I think bringing certain social media into the classroom could be a useful platform to engage older students if used correctly. However, I teach third grade and I do not think any social media would be appropriate given their age.

Using social media can help students learn employable skills like discretion, honesty, responsibility, initiative, patients, tact, and willingness to learn. It also allows students to communicate effectively, both orally (videos) and in writing. @georgejroy #EDTE731SPRING2020
