Since this is getting traction Most people outside of banking think hashing is the best way to store a password. It’s one of many. Most banks don’t store plaintext. They generate a random key + salt and encrypt the password using a symmetric standard like AES on the client then the key is encrypted using an asymmetric standard like RSA using the banks public key and sent to the server. Even a MITM attack(not likely over https but still) The only way to decrypt it is the banks private key. Then there’s further encryption in the DB at rest. Ridiculous amounts of access controls, checks, key rotations source: I’ve written code for 5 of the 10 largest pvt banks in India and even 1 RBI(rebit) project what they’ve done is odd but RBI has some of the strictest checks and audits for code in the world. I’ve worked with overseas banks and they’re on tech 20 years old. RBI will be at your neck even if some obscure library you use becomes EOL by 1 day whoever answers why they do AES on the password then RSA the key and not he password directly will be paid whatever number of likes this post gets by me( ₹500 cap)
