In a recent conversation inTruthoutbetween historianElizabeth Todd-Brelandand professor of philosophyGeorge Yancy, they remind us thatschools are central to the struggle over knowledge, history, and democracy.
From enslaved people risking their lives to learn to read, to today’s efforts to censor curriculum and dismantle equity programs, the fight over education has always been tied to the fight for freedom.
The same forces trying to erase Black history are also working to silence and erase the histories and experiences of women and LGBTQ+ communities in our classrooms.
Chicago educators know another path — the one championed byKaren Lewisand generations of teachers, students, parents, and organizers who fought to defend public education as a public good.
Karen Lewis and Chicago’s multiracial education justice movement taught us that defending public schools also means defending the truth, the full history of our communities, and the freedom dreams our students carry forward.
Elizabeth Todd-Breland co-authored the memoir of the late CTU President Karen Lewis — I Didn’t Come Here to Lie: My Life and Education. Learn more at truthout.org/articles/we-mu…

✍️ @saramengato1 & A. Haase explain the urban #greening paradox as a structural tension between the universalist values of #sustainability and the neoliberal policy logics through which greening is implemented.
