I'll be leading a reading group of "Rustin's Challenge" this summer. We'll meet every Tuesday night from July 21-August 24. Since it's a collection of essays, it's definitely fine if you can't make every session. Sign up here! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

The goal celebration of putting the ball under their shirt and sucking their thumb like a baby is truly disgusting. I get irrationally enraged when I see it. But like why is this a thing.

@drantbradley King was openly a democratic socialist. That's not even disputed.

The new Democratic Party, as a socialist party, claims to fight for the poor and the oppressed but you never seem the marginalized at their political events. It’s white college educated elites. Reminder: MLK was a staunch critic of socialism.

There is no way we can address the affordability crisis without strong unions. Period. Congrats to @UNITEHEREPhilly for winning $30/hr for hotel workers across downtown Philadelphia.

1/ The New Deal expanded and stabilized black industrial working class through mass unionization and later helped create reliable jobs through the expansion of public-sector employment, with far less arbitrary discrimination than in the private labor market. The shift of black voters into FDR coalition wasn't false consciousness. it reflected the tangible benefits of relief programs, public employment, labor protections, and industrial unionism. 2/ People often note that Social Security excluded agricultural and domestic workers as being racialized, but most excluded workers were white, and the exclusions reflected the political power of agricultural interests and limited state/admin capacity (not unique to the US). 3/ New Deal-era federal housing policy obviously reinforced segregation, and there's been well-warranted attention to that. But it's hard to see how that makes the New Deal project as a whole "anti-black," given the enormous gains it delivered through employment, labor rights, & social provision
Alejandro@kukito_122

@AJD20201 @sunraysunray Two things can be true: a lot of black people voted for FDR and the new deal was anti black.

Another great @labornotes conference! One highlight was the transit meeting, where Gerardo Hernandez from the union of transit workers in Mexico City spoke with transit workers from across the US. Labor Notes is great for making these cross-border connections.

Early morning @PennaNurses picket with nurses at Einstein hospital! Their contract expired May 1st and management is calling their proposals for safe staffing levels "junk."

They think the conductors make too much and the engineers make too much and the sanitation workers make too much and the teachers make too much but YOU - who sits on a laptop making Line Go Up - are totally safe. They'll never come after you. Promise

having electricians and other trades on staff, even if during the few minutes you walk by it looks like they're not working, is infinitely cheaper than contracting out everything they do

my husband is an electrician at SEPTA, on the regional rail. lighting is one of the biggest safety concerns of public transit, and if they didn't have union electricians on the payroll, it would end up costing tax payers a lot more!

On my morning commutes I see half-a-dozen 300lb men stand around a ladder while someone switches a lightbulb @ NY Penn Station. It takes a $1 Billion to refurbish a train station nowadays. The SAS costs over $3b/mile. Being infinitely conciliatory to unions gets you nowhere.
