South Levantine Arabic uses a unique -o (و) suffix in kinship terms like 'ammo (عمو), 'ammto (عمتو), khalto (خالتو). This ‘wawation’ also appears in Asiri, Tihami and North Mesopotamian dialects. Wawation for personal names and nouns was a distinct feature of Nabataean Arabic and other ancient North Arabian/South Levantine Arabic dialects.
“The Levantine situation may, therefore, reflect a continuation of ancient Nabataean-type wawation”
This feature in modern South Levantine, Asiri, Tihami and North Mesopotamian dialects likely originates from ancient North Arabian/South Levantine Arabic dialects and/or Nabataean Arabic.
