The content of the adhan is this: "Allahu Akbar (God is great)" "Hayya alas-salah (Come to prayer)" "La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)" In other words, he declared in the shrine grounds: "There is no god here but Allah." Here's the part people keep pointing to. Under Article 188 of Japan's Penal Code — the crime of desecrating a place of worship — a public act of disrespect at a sacred site can carry up to six months in prison or a ¥100,000 fine. By uploading the clip himself, critics argue, he handed prosecutors the "public" element of the offense. To be clear, this law isn't about which faith you follow. It would apply exactly the same way to someone disrespecting a mosque, a church, or a temple. A shrine is a sacred space, and respect for it isn't optional just because you're a visitor.
