@daveg @MazzucatoM Why do we need AI to tell us to stop pumping CO2 into the atmosphere? The only thing better modelling will do is more accurately tell us where the end-stops to our activities are. The action we need to take is the same. Why use our carbon budget on AI to tell us to stop polluting

@MazzucatoM AI is also probably our best bet for being able to model computationally irreducible natural systems to fight climate change. But we need to look at innovation in the grid so that it is powered by zero emissions energy (and possibly ban proof of work crypto to compensate).

My article today on why the ‘cloud’ is not fuzzy and light but carbon heavy. And why we need carbon disclosures for the supply chain of AI, and tech more generally. “The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates” theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Even think tanks can be staffed by morons
Arnaud Bertrand@RnaudBertrand

This is actually quite funny. The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) probably the most warmongering Think Tank in the US, unintentionally screwed themselves with this because if their adjustments for China's defense spending are correct, then it necessarily means that similar adjustments should be made to China's GDP overall... and when you calculate, it means China's GDP is actually $54 trillion, more than twice that of the US! Which means you have the AEI hilariously admitting the US has completely and irremediably lost the race for supremacy: you can't bridge such a gap where you economy is less than half that of your competitor... How? Because to arrive to their number they essentially say "we first need to adjust China's nominal defense spending to PPP and then on top of that we need to look at the salary differential between the Chinese and the Americansa and further adjust by that ratio". Which is senseless because the salary differential is accounted for in the PPP adjustment in the first place but, hey, if that's what they say 🤷‍♂️ These types of adjustments apply to China's GDP overall: China overall has a large salary differential with the US. And therefore, the same multiplier that they apply to defense spending should be applied to GDP which gives you $54 trillion. So let's thank the AEI for telling the world that we're now in a global order where China is incomparably wealthier and more powerful than America 😊 All kidding aside they are correct that China's defense spending and GDP need to be adjusted for PPP in order to compare it with the US. Which means that China's defense spending is higher than the nominal value and actually stands at about $352bn, about half that of the US. It also means that China's GDP today stands at $35 trillion, or about 25% higher than the US. Which is very telling: their actual GDP is 25% than that of the US with half the defense spending. Maybe this explains that...

Labour rightly & noisily are waving a big stick at the water industry over sewage pouring into our rivers & on to our beaches But they ignore the key point: privatisation has failed. Water is an essential resource & should be in public hands as it is everywhere else in Europe

It is criterial to understand that everybody wants to draw a line under the problem and say “good enough” there. Oligarchy defeated? Ok. Universal healthcare? Ok. For me that line is “people have more or less the same long life regardless of age or job title”. Kerala model!

Today, the UK government announced that the military budget will grow to £50 billion, at a time when every other department is under huge financial pressure. I asked the Defence Secretary what he is doing to bring about a more peaceful world.

Ascribing agency to technologies is a tactic of powerholders to misdirect attention away from their own role as protagonists and away from the interests being served.

"It's not inevitable. We decide what to do. ... The humans build the tech. The tech is not sentient, it's not a being, it's not a god. Ascribing agency to a tool is a mistake. And it is a diversion tactic." - Timnit Gebru, @timnitGebru at #RightsCon

I've called on @RishiSunak to urgently correct the record after he "inadvertently misled" the House during #PMQs by saying he'd only heard of allegations against Gavin Williamson yesterday. A former Tory Chair states he informed the PM well in advance about bullying allegations.
