@QuetzalThoughts The people complaining about Beloved are one of the following: 1) vile racists 2) genteel racists who don’t consider her one of the greats 3) non-racists who just don’t like her style 4) genuine Morrison fans who prefer another novel or think #2 is too high

Beloved is a close contender for my favorite book of all time. Even as a teenager, I cried in a few spots when we read it in High School and her word play and choices are superb. I genuinely think that if you dislike Beloved, you don't actually care for literature
John Podhoretz@jpodhoretz

The Guardian’s panel has chosen the 100 greatest novels of all time and has put BELOVED second. That is among the most ludicrous aesthetic judgments in the annals of Western culture. Embarrassing tokenism.

@harrisondubay I can just picture two obese Nazi 20-something staffers high fiving each other as one of them hits send. Also, they only graze each other’s hands as both recoil in discomfort at being reminded of their latent homosexuality and accompanying self-hate

@rBillSimmonsPod Joel defender here: he’s done great “serious” long-form journalism for Slate and is solid on the Press Box pod for The Ringer. Agree though that he failed his Rewatchables audition here. He will not be market correcting Van as the token black guy

@EmmettStinson The greatest film of all time that no one talks about. Y’all aren’t ready for that conversation. Name a better film. Go ahead, I’ll wait. (How am I doing on my annoying Captain Obvious Twitter engagement bait!?)

@ianlcohen JA had some real bangers and can easily be revived via the usual multi-faceted efforts: reissue campaign (complete discography remastered box set), biopic starring A-lister (would Chalamet, Butler do it again?), viral TikTok song

Two bands that keep popping up again and again as I interview bands for my book... 1) Jane's Addiction (they all respected Fugazi, but *worshipped* Jane's Addiction) 2) Archers of Loaf (the band that was *always* playing at the college town bars they couldn't get into)

@matthiasellis Genuinely curious if Platner could be the start of a mini-trend for at least some segment of MAGA dudes post Trump: I.e. economic populism w/a “who cares” approach to culture that excises or ignores any past racism/sexism/homophobia/xenophobia, etc.

When my son was 10, he recognized that I was an older father and he was not happy about that, and I never considered that. I walked into his bedroom one night, I could tell he'd been crying, puffy eyes, tears stained cheek. And I go, what's going on, buddy? Because I don't know his name. I’m never home. My son said, I've just been thinking, I'm 10 now and you're 63. When I'm 20. You're gonna be 73. When I'm 30. You'll be 83. You won’t be around for a lot of my life. I said. Buddy buddy, buddy. What's his fucking name. I said I’ll be around for a long time. Don't you worry about that. I'll be around when you graduate. I'll be around when you get married, when you have kids, I’ll be around for all that stuff. You just gotta make it happen in the next four years. Otherwise, yeah, you're probably right. I won't be around. He said, no, I'm serious. Dad. Dad? he doesn't know my name either.

The JP Morgan lawsuit is so funny. He very clearly thought that filing this lawsuit is a calculated risk and that the details would be so salacious that JPM would just pay him like $800k to go away. He probably had a whole risk formula! He just forgot the part where not everyone is as autistic as he is and when you say “my boss was a BDSM demon lord 🥺”they won’t just settle and go away because that’s the fastest option in the prisoners dilemma scenario you constructed in your mind and in fact, they will call you into court and make you explain yourself, at which point, you reveal yourself to be a porn-brained doofus who is just really really good at math but also retarded in every other aspect of life

@AlanPhelge @AmericanGwyn Badly written fantasy polemic. Still think it’s essential reading in concert with identity politics writings on the left/lib — imo books from both extreme sides pf thr spectrum are rigid and lead to the same inequities we have now.

Haven’t read this novel; don’t know anything about it. But if you want to ensure a book’s success, ban it. Immediately raises its profile & creates the kind of publicity money can’t buy. Americans love an outlaw. (Wish someone would ban all my books. Then I could retire).
Reddit Lies@reddit_lies

r/BannedBooks celebrates over Amazon banning "Camp of the Saints" The comments are wild: "As a librarian that's not actually a book, I would remove it from my library" "I don't like book bans, but..." "It's not a book ban because it's a private company"
