The SNP has increased taxes on higher incomes. Not on wealth. Don’t you understand the difference in the Numpty Nursery? What have you done to tackle wealth inequality? What have you done to those who ‘hoard wealth’? Who are they? Name them. Or are you simply referring to folks who save — savings that are then invested. It isn't only Spain's borders that have been breached. The great edifice of linguistic gymnastics has taken a bit of a battering too. For years we were told the real danger wasn't losing control of the border. It was using the wrong noun to describe it. Don't say "illegal immigrant". Don't say "invasion". Don't say "crisis". Heaven forbid you should offend the thesaurus. Raise so much as an eyebrow about mass illegal immigration and you risked being dismissed as a right-wing extremist, a racist, or simply someone who didn't understand the complexity of it all. Europe has become remarkably adept at border control of one particular kind. Not the sort involving fences, coastguards or passport checks, but the policing of adjectives. We couldn't stop tens of thousands crossing a frontier, but by goodness we could stop someone saying something impolite about it. There is something wonderfully surreal about a political culture that can convene a seminar on inclusive terminology before it can secure a border crossing. Orwell wouldn't be asking for royalties. He'd be asking who plagiarised him. The real lesson from Ceuta isn't simply that Spain has a border problem. It's that Europe has spent years policing speech more vigorously than sovereignty. We've spent so long rewriting the dictionary that we've forgotten to lock the front door. It turns out changing the language doesn't change reality. It merely delays the moment when reality barges through the front door. Anyone who thinks this begins and ends in Spain is fooling themselves. Events on Europe's southern frontier have a habit of rippling north. They shape politics, border policy and public confidence across the continent, including here in the UK. Perhaps the biggest question is the one too few people seem willing to ask. Who fed tens of thousands of people on their journey? Who told them where to go? Why that border? Why that day? Movements of this scale do not simply materialise out of thin air. Whether the answer turns out to be traffickers, social media, organised criminal networks, state actors or some combination of all four, Europe owes its citizens an honest explanation. A democratic nation has both the right and the duty to control who enters its territory. That isn't right-wing extremism. It's one of the first responsibilities of any functioning state. If we no longer believe that, perhaps sensible people should stop pretending we still have a fully functioning democracy or a state that is fulfilling its most basic duty to its own citizens.

Absolutely heartbroken and furious on behalf of @rachelsfletcher. In yet another parallel universe, an exemplary female police detective has been sacked without notice today for complaining (in the office, no members of public around) about male violence, misogyny, sexual violence, and her fear that the force capture re gender woo would mean female officers may be required to strip-search male suspects. Total disgrace, and a terrible loss not only of a career, but to the victims of male predators she helped bang up.
