Writing off "feminism" as a whole, just because its modern iteration, in the form of third wave "feminism" is stupid, displays deep ignorance in terms of the history of the women's movement. I have spent my entire career criticizing third wave feminism, from the abhorrent "sex work is work" mantra; to the delusion that porn, thotty selfies, BDSM, and burlesque equate to empowerment for women because CHOICE; to intersectionality essentially decentering women from the women's movement in order to hyperfocus on identity politics; to of course the trans takeover of all discourse. So there is no need to lecture me on the damage caused by modern feminist discourse and ideology. That said, writing off the entire women's movement as a whole, as a result of these failures and mistakes, is ignorant and short-sighted. Women fought for almost a century to gain the right to vote. This was not an easy fight, though it's treated as a blip in history. Most of the women's movement was about fighting for basic rights that offered women autonomy, practical rights so that they could function as persons in society, and recourse in the face of abuse or rape. The right wing or black pilled men who insist feminism is the scourge of the earth seem unaware that for a very long time men were allowed to beat and rape their wives with impunity, women were not allowed to attend university, and men held all the rights/power in cases of divorce/child custody (which, regardless of the male bitterness at the supposed unfairness of women being granted child custody over men, is stupid, because obviously mothers, in general, are better equipped to take care of their babies and young children than men, who are much more often the abusers in the family). If you claim to be invested in protecting liberal democracies from the oppressive, authoritarian regimes that exist in Islamic and communist countries, you must also be invested in women's rights. Treating third wave nonsense as though it is representative of the entire feminist movement (as well as describing it as "radical feminism") and lecturing your audience, equally as ignorant as you to the actual history of the women's movement, is irresponsible and would be embarrassing were you not placing your ego above your interest in reading or learning about the things you claim an investment in. It was never a good idea to try to turn the Clacton by-election into a joke, but the joke has gone dark now. The murder of Ann Widdecombe has made the quaint British tradition of novelty candidates seem rather tasteless. We do not need to speculate about the motive for the killing to know that someone who had been an MP has died, and that concern for politicians’ security is no laughing matter. Not that Nigel Farage’s justified worry about his and his family’s safety is necessarily an issue in the by-election. But his complaint that it was not being taken seriously enough by the authorities was part of his grievance against the “establishment” that prompted him to trigger the by-election. It should have been a chance for a serious debate about MPs’ security and whether Farage was right to say that “the state” had reduced his protection, forcing him to rely on the generosity of Christopher Harborne, a wealthy donor, instead. Serious candidates against Farage could have acknowledged his fears while asking whether they required him to conceal the £5m gift that he received – the gift that Farage said he intended to spend on his personal security, which he would need “for the rest of my life”. After the murders of Jo Cox and David Amess, there are reasonable questions to be asked about the level of protection offered to Farage, and why he turned down the offer as “inadequate”. He is alleged to have refused a taxpayer-funded driver, car and bodyguard – the equivalent level of protection to that provided to high-profile cabinet ministers and to Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader. Why didn’t he accept what the House of Commons authorities and the police were offering and then top it up from the money he had received, while making the case that the public purse should bear the full cost? Why hasn’t he actually spent any of the £5m he received from Harborne more than two years ago? Instead of these questions, we have had a lot of silly jokes about bins. I am all for the great British tradition of novelty candidates. They are like court jesters, reminding our leaders that our democracy is open and our expression is free. They add colour to our elections and a healthy disrespect for the powerful. But elections are a fundamentally serious business, even if they have been called for what may seem to some to be tactical or misguided reasons. One of the reasons David Davis failed to make much of a mark with his by-election in 2008, when he resigned and re-fought his seat in protest against Labour’s erosion of civil liberties, is that the government made a good case for many of its supposedly illiberal measures. If the main parties had stood candidates against Farage in Clacton, at least one of them might have asked difficult questions about why he failed to declare the £5m donation from Harborne and the unquantified donations in kind from George Cottrell. They could have sympathised with Farage’s fears for his security, but point out that they do not excuse his failure to obey the rules on the registration of benefits that may be “reasonably be thought by others” to be related to their “political activities”. Instead, Farage can say that the establishment parties have run away from the election because they know they would lose, even if they united behind a single anti-Reform candidate, which is true, while continuing to claim that they are not taking his family’s safety seriously, which is probably not. But by failing to stand candidates, the main parties have handed over moral authority to a comedian dressed as a bin. Even Andy Burnham had a line about Count Binface in one of his impromptu speeches, saying “a nation’s hopes rest on you”. In the words of one of Burnham’s favourite bands, The Smiths, that joke isn’t funny any more.

Useful answers from @amnestyuk and @amnesty on the “anti-rights” report. AmnestyUK acts independently of the international secretariat on national campaigns like this. Interesting only the last report taken down not previous reports, press release, podcast thenational.scot/news/26276645.…

Our system is broken. Trans children are outed, humiliated and left feeling alone and vulnerable. The next government has a huge oppotunity to overhaul the Gender Recognition Act and prioritse #transrights. amn.st/60121rizI

Meet David Warren Hooker, now known as Ava Fey. He is currently housed in a California women’s prison. Hooker was adopted as a young child. According to family members, he was a troubled kid who was in and out of juvenile detention throughout his youth. One relative said he once held a knife to a cousin’s throat At age 20, he robbed a bank. While serving his sentence, David threatened the President of the United States, extending his time in prison. His adoptive father, retired LAPD Sgt. Thomas Hooker, never gave up on him, calling him every week while he was in federal prison & housing him when he was paroled. But within six months of his release, he began a sexual relationship with his stepmother and the two conspired to kill his father for insurance money. They gave Thomas extra sleeping pills, removed the smoke detector, set the house on fire, and waited 45 minutes before calling 911. Thomas died of smoke inhalation. David was convicted of first-degree murder and arson in 1995 and sentenced to 25 years to life. David was one of the early inmates transferred to a California women’s prison under SB 132, the law authored by Senator Scott Wiener allowing male inmates who identify as women to request transfer to women’s prisons. Women incarcerated there have described David as hypersexual, highly intelligent, and dangerous. In the years leading up to the passage of SB 132, KQED ran a series of puff pieces on incarcerated men who identified as women. They allowed David Hooker to tell his own story with little fact checking. He claimed to have been a homeless, sex-trafficked youth that lived as a woman after his release from federal prison and before he killed his father. KQED did not mention that he was only free for 6 months and during that time was having an affair with his stepmother. (Somehow I highly doubt he declared himself a woman in 1993 while banging his stepmom and conspiring to kill his dad. There was no mention of any trans identity at the trial by either side.) KQED also let David claim he never intended to kill his father, with no discussion of the evidence presented at trial supporting the fact that this was a deliberate murder. Even with KQED trying their best to portray David as sympathetic and nonthreatening, every quote of David’s is creepy. Here he is advocating for the state of California to pay for hair removal: “It is more than hormones and getting a vagina. If you do just a part, what are you going to do, create a bearded lady? … That’s a circus freak show.” Anyway, the state of California considers David Hooker legally female and incarcerated women have no power to say no. It is a nightmare beyond words to not only be housed with a man, but to be told by those in power you can’t even call him a man. Links to my sources ⬇️
