@HRH_Ted It would be fascinating if there were an alternative explanation. Any thoughts?

@ScottAppliedSci If it's based on CICO, then it works, by definition. It's also not complex, given that if cutting calories does not work initially, cutting a bit more will eventually work. What's complex is not suffering unduly under a calorie deficit.

Eat less and move more never works! It's based on CICO, which all the best diet gurus decry. Thermodynamics doesn't apply to open systems. Calories are imaginary heat units. It's mass balance. It's hormones. It's complex. Let's have a discovery call. You can't help yourself. Try my koolaid. Vs. Reality. 👇

@DKThomp who are the nutrition experts who claimed CICO is not the main factor in weight gain/loss, when there are consensus statements (e.g. Endocrine society) stating that it is? Plus, that "probably" in the sentence is illogical.

I'm happy to be corrected by nutrition experts, but I *really* don't like this framing in the NYT on why "calories in/calories out" is overrated. The passage below makes it seem like ultra-processed foods are bad for you in ways that have very little to do with calorie consumption. But Kevin Hall’s famous 2019 metabolic ward study found that people randomized to an ultra-processed diet ate more calories. The name of Hall 2019 paper is, literally: "Ultra-Processed Diets Cause Excess Calorie Intake and Weight Gain." In other words, if we really want to understand why *some* ultra-processed foods are bad for us—and they're not all that bad! sugar-free almond milk is an ultra-processed food!—we can't throw out the "calories in/calories out" model. One of the key ways that UFPs cause weight gain is that their energy density/rapid digestion leads to MORE CALORIES IN.

@ScottAppliedSci 1. A single epidemiological study on Norwegians might be a bit too little, especially considering that the RCT were very short term. 2. Some of us have already diligently self-experimented, with zero effects during months-long n-1 trials.

☕Your morning coffee is health healthy, right? Antioxidants, polyphenols, magnesium, B-vits, even the caffeine. But the most important part is not in the beans. And it changes everything. It's the filter! I'll explain ... 🧵

@gregmushen But since collagen is more expensive than whey, you can bet the former is just a minor component added for marketing.

So in practical terms: you can’t count on this drink to give either robust muscle anabolism or connective tissue support without both (1) whey dominance and (2) vitamin C co ingestion.

Sei pronta?
Tiziana C@Tiziana0219

@DrNadolsky I am not sure you guys talked about this in a podcast? Some guidelines read to me as "get you ldl below 60mg/dl asap, with meds if needed". If I say this to my doc he will laugh in my face. Do you have any opinions on this?

@cremieuxrecueil If anything, there could be a negative correlation between sport performance and success dieting: many athletes struggle with caloric deficits induced by exercise. That subpopulation will have zero experience inducing a caloric deficit mostly through diet.

This conclusion is so wild. GLP-1RAs are not magic. You still lose weight through eating less, and that's it. They aren't a metabolism enhancer. So, yes, even Serena Williams overeats.

@davidhanley72 @sguyenet I don't know why anybody would consider DOGE's "research" reputable after they failed so miserably. You are functionally a troll, so no need for me to waste any more time on you.

@davidhanley72 @sguyenet I thought I was trying to make the point that you shouldn't heed anybody's anecdotes? Though you are right, since I worked in USA-based R1 institutions for 12 years, I do have an excellent perspective. Still anecdotal, and good for an hypothesis at best.

@davidhanley72 @sguyenet This is like saying "my grandpa smoked and lived to 100". The stories of investigators obsessively saving on federal money are just as common. That's why there are cost benefit analyses to cut through individual perceptions.

Having worked in federally funded science, i’m on the DOGE side. The amount of waste was mind-boggling. I’m talking building a $5 million dollar computer cluster, spening $20K a month to power and cool it, and never using it because there was no money allocated for networking. Ran for 5 years then got decommissioned.

You're not really a life extension advocate if you're telling people to avoid living life so they can live a few years longer. Proper life extension will confer unlimited healthspan and the ability to drink, party, enjoy yourself, and live youthfully, forever.
