yeah I’m not sure what all the fuss is about Although I will say that the proposal did have quite a few problems for example, it would prevent Americans from being able to start businesses in the UK, doesn’t distinguish between income and asset wealth, (even Elon Musk would not be considered a “contributor” if he moved to the UK) and so on might be best to just draft a better plan, although in the interest of time maybe best to just implement this one without applying it to people already here if they’re going to threaten a total party implosion over it, at least it’s done for the future!

No, Angela Rayner, it is not “un-British” to refuse automatic citizenship to people who are literally, you know, un-British.

@UKLabour Steel workers do not contribute to the UK. ^ that’s not my opinion, that’s Labour’s opinion, as British steel workers earn under the salary threshold Labour has set to be considered a “contributor” to the UK.

While London may want to rejoin, areas like mine that voted 70% to leave definitely do not. In an increasingly divided world, the last thing we need is to divide the country all over again by restarting this debate.

Most senior Labour figure yet to openly call for party to put rejoining EU in next election manifesto. Will others now follow? (Very few even say this privately - but it’s a long time until the next election)…

The proposal was largely good but it did have problems, for example, it would literally prevent Elon Musk from being able to get settlement in the UK. He would not be considered a contributor. Why? Because his salary is $1. The proposal decided "contribution" = "salary income", and nothing else matters. Asset wealth is not considered. Which quite obviously makes zero sense.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Labour will give 1.6 million migrants settled status - and thus access to Britain’s welfare state and eventual citizenship. It is a crowded field, but this would be one of largest immigration betrayals yet. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/1…

The proposal itself is largely good/directionally correct, but it has clearly been rushed and there are far too many unmitigated and unintended consequences of the proposal as written. For example, did you know, if you're a literal BILLIONAIRE from the US, and you move to the UK, you're unable to settle in the UK due to this proposal, as written?

Although we would go further, these ILR changes are a step in the right direction If Keir Starmer is too weak to get his backbenchers to vote for his own policy, he can rely on our votes to get this through parliament. We will always put the national interest first If Keir Starmer and Shabana Mahmood water down these plans it will show they are too weak to protect our country’s borders - because they are scared of Angela Raynor and their own backbenchers

Keir Starmer wobbling over immigration reforms after attack from Angela Rayner. No 10 unwilling to say that controversial changes to indefinite leave to remain will still go ahead - teeing up massive row with Shabana Mahmood who is determined to force them through

Immigration climbdown incoming? After yesterday's attack by Angela Rayner on "un-British" reforms, Downing Street now repeatedly refusing to stand by Shabana Mahmood's policy to toughen the indefinite leave to remain criteria. No10 still saying they are committed to a "fair" immigration system but will now not get ahead of a government "consultation".

yeah that's what you'd think, and the fact that Labour didn't realise the issue before releasing the proposal is an indication that they didn't think it through at all when you're in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa, there are several requirements, a few of which are: 1. You must work for the company sponsoring your visa full time. 2. You cannot work for another company (including your own business) more than 20h p/w 3. If you work for another company (including your own business) then it must be done outside the hours you are working for your primary employer. These rules effectively make it impossible to add meaningful additional value to the UK economy outside of your sponsored role. Once you have ILR, these restrictions don't apply anymore, and you're free to focus full time on your own business. So Labour has created a situation where I could've hired 3 British people to work for me in November But instead, they're saying, no, I just have to work my regular job for another 10 years. It just wasn't well thought out. The policy is heading in the right direction but they need to put more thought into it.

yeah, we're in agreement about that for usre in your opinion, how difficult would it be to add a clause that says: "migrants from countries with higher median income than UK are exempted" or "migrants from countries with lower post-settlement benefit claim rates than native British population are exempted" seems an easy fix no?

If the proposals just affected a few hundred American AI engineers, who share a language and on average will be massive net contributors, then they would be excessive. But they actually affect a few million low-wage migrants, from extremely different cultures, which could (depending on OBR statistics, subject to review) cost a net £200b+ over their lifetimes. Britain simply cannot afford to give this wave of migrants full access to the British welfare state. cps.org.uk/media/post/202…

And if we don't tackle the issue properly then we leave it to racists in Reform to deal with the problem, who will be MUCH harsher. She's actually got the "balls" to take action to prevent Reform having ownership of it. At least that's how I see it.
