@TheWARmonger_ It’s also worth noting that “balls” in 1879 weren’t balls as we know them, they were pitches. You had four strikes for a strikeout and nine pitches for a walk. Out-of-zone pitched did nothing but get you closer to that 9 total

@JordanLeandre55 It’s so funny when people try to claim that Nolan Ryan was pumping 105+ when his best 5-year stretch of OPS against was .585 Jacob Misiorowski has a .582 OPSa for his career You mean to tell me the 80s guy “throwing 105 for 9 innings” was an easier opponent than Miz right now?

@LuisChevalier17 @BaseballWRLD_ Wow yeah, I’d never heard that story. The local Rays scout loved Pujols, the Rays were the only team to give him a pre-draft workout, but they chose not to draft him (allegedly due to their focus on Florida-born talent and concerns of his age). The scout quit on the spot

@TheMikeMicG @JordanLeandre55 And considering that the average catcher gets about 2500 frameable pitches per 100 games (and that the average framed strike/misframed ball is worth 0.125 runs/-0.125), retaining 80% of that value means that framing is still by far the most valuable piece of catcher defense

@TheMikeMicG @JordanLeandre55 You’d think, but that’s not really the case In 2026 13.8% of pitches taken just outside are called strikes (16.6% w/o challenges) 13.8% of pitches taken just inside are called balls (18.7% w/o challenges) It’s less, but 80% of framing opportunities are still present

If we are basing HOF inductions on the stats used back in the 50s, we are really regressing as a voter contingent. Salvy has had a very good career, great by the standards of the Royals. Since debuting, he's 14th among Cs in fWAR despite leading the position in GP by over 300.
Mike McG@TheMikeMicG

@JordanLeandre55 Soo World Series mvp, 9x all star, 5x gold glove, 5x silver slugger, and clement award aren’t enough? 300 hr and 1000+ rbi. That’s pretty fucking great for a catcher if you ask me. Him and Yadi are the best in recent history. But yea let’s just go by stats half the HOF didn’t use

@BaseballWRLD_ Saying “they were only $3.6M AAV behind the Dodgers with the same years” barely counts but I’m counting it. The one I always forget is the Bryant/Kimbrel for Glasnow/Kiermaier trade that fell through

@TheMikeMicG @JordanLeandre55 Baseball Reference WAR completely omits framing, which has been an much larger piece of catcher defense after MLB eliminated league-specific umpire pools in 2000 But even if we use that WAR to give Salvy the best shot, he’s still behind JT Realmuto and Russell Martin

@JordanLeandre55 So for catchers in the HOF he’s 14th? Or? Baseball reference says Salvy war>Ray so this is why I hate using war. It’s better for comping players now and calling them up but not good for HOF

@DabollToHeaven It happened in 2021-22 with Cade/Green/Mobley/Barnes, and 2018-19 had the whole top 5 (and I’m still pissed “Marvin Bagley” made it over Mitch)

@LuisChevalier17 @Nyanasaur @JordanLeandre55 Compare that to Mazeroski being the biggest difference-maker for 1960 G1 and G5, being the guy who hit the walkoff homer in G7, and Salvy’s generally-subpar postseason stats (especially 2014 WS G7), and I think it makes sense to give Maz a big lead in playoff performance

@LuisChevalier17 @Nyanasaur @JordanLeandre55 He was fine. Despite the gaudy AVG and WS MVP, he wasn’t super productive. Salvy has a negative WPA and cWPA in the series (1 of only 2 WS MVPs to do that), and if you revisit the games it makes sense G1: Non-factor G2: Non-factor G3: Non-factor G4: Great G5: Mildly productive

@SeaTrident2026 @MarinerMuse Wins Above Average isn’t really a longevity stat. It’s just what happens when Crawford is one of nine Mariners that’s top-30 in Offensive Value and Defensive value, with the other guys being the other franchise greats (Griffey/Ichiro/ARod/JRod/Boone/Seager/Cameron/Raleigh)

@AlexDevMLB @MarinerMuse Just because he played the longest doesn’t mean he’s one of the best. Longevity will get you those stats.

@GreenfieldMax18 Jake Bird has the most disparity between 4-seam/sinker out-of-hand spin and has thrown his sweeper/curveball in the zone at the 5th-highest rate from 2025-26. I think he just can’t really fool anyone. His observed movement chart is one of the most distinct I’ve seen, zero overlap

Every time I watch Jake Bird pitch I don't understand how he's not the best reliever on the team.

@Nyanasaur @JordanLeandre55 I’m taking Mazeroski over Salvy ngl. At least he can hang his hat on being the best defensive 2B ever, actually having a WS where he played well, and being the best 2B in the NL for 7 years/the best 2B in MLB for 4 years

@JordanLeandre55 After accounting for Bill Mazeroski and Ray Schalk, Salvy would likely be the worst position player HOFer
