After a successful but challenging nasotracheal intubation of a pt with severe Angioedema, our residents took a moment while on shift to touch up on their nasopharyngoscopy skills.@kmboehm1 @BrowardEM
@nickmmark@NEJM IMO DL still has an import role (learners). Both Mac-VL & DL teach good laryngoscopy. With VL, if a resident doesn’t immediately find the glottis, they struggle to manipulate the scope and find their target. DL teaches them how to trouble shoot when they can’t find cords
In light of the #DEVICE trial (published today at @NEJMnejm.org/doi/full/10.10…), has video laryngoscopy (VL) replaced direct laryngoscopy (DL) as the de facto standard of care (SOC) for intubations performed in the ED & ICU?
@historyinmemes Sagan was one of my heros growing up, he truly made the world a better place with his presence. “To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
Pale Blue Dot is a photo of Earth that was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as it was leaving our solar system. This is what Carl Sagan said about the photo:
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor, and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
We had so much fun at #FLAAEM this weekend! We love presenting posters, dressing up to compete in SIM wars, & catching up with the other South Florida residents and faculty
Some things we’ve been up to here at Broward: Ultrasound scavenger hunt, airway management with the Miami dolphins, quality improvement projects, and of course, boat parties for resident wellness 🤙🏼 looking forward to expanding this awesome team come late June!

Over 30 years ago, Donald Trump took out full page ads calling for my execution.
On the day he was arrested and arraigned, here is my ad in response.
consider me lucky! ◡̈ Hopefully you won’t need to visit me in the ER, but if you do… I’ll be there! I’m so happy that I matched at @BrowardEM. This still feels like a dream, but I can’t wait to start this journey of my career. #MedTwitter#Match2023#MatchDay2023#EMbound
Complete airway obstruction by food bolus. Attempted removal with Magill forceps under VL visualization unsuccessful, so paramedic pushed the bolus aside to get an indirect view of the cords, which was navigated with a bougie. Damn fine work. #bougiencbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
