The Other Side (Australian Vodcast)
I’m tired of the smug tone of every news report in Australia on the war right now which seems to be saying: “oh no we should never have started this and it’s getting worse and Trump is to blame.” Does anyone actually want to get rid of horrible regimes that want to threaten the civilised world, develop nukes and routinely kill their own people? Or is it too inconvenient to our pampered lives? We expect a war to have zero horrible consequences and be over in a couple of weeks and if it isn’t we vilify our own leaders for even trying. Is it best to enable despots and legitimise them in the name of “equity” as the UN has done for decades?* Or do we fight and get rid of them to make the world a better place for the long term? We’re so weak. We have no moral compass. And we have no resolve. And we want everything NOW - with no pain. We praise weak leaders who won’t even try: Europe, UK, Australia, Canada. We condemn those who do like the US and Israel. We smugly accuse them of “acting in self interest” as if that alone makes an action against pure evil invalid? We point to their own flaws as if that validates the horrors they are fighting and makes the fight unjustified. God, we are so dumb. *The UN isn’t even doing what the UN is SUPPOSED to do. It has a “responsibility to protect” doctrine which means it should have acted against Iran decades ago.

Australia might still be the world's best place to live but we're letting ourselves down big time. Four weeks into the Iran war: 10% of our servos wholly or partially out of fuel. 30% of farmers worried they lack the diesel to sow or harvest their crops. Flights being cancelled. No Australian-flagged fleet of tankers that could be tasked with a fuel rescue mission; with no naval ships capable of helping to break any Iranian blockade; and with no Australian air power yet despatched to the Middle East to help the US-Israel campaign against an apocalyptic theocracy, even though the Straits will never be secure while it lasts. Successive governments convinced themselves that an 'unstoppable green energy transition' meant access to fossil fuels was neither necessary nor desirable. That was always a fantasy, and now we're paying the price. Fossil fuels are still responsible for 90% of our energy needs. The Bondi massacre was a wake up call on social cohesion. The Iran war is a wake up call on national resilience. Dealing with both means recovering the self-belief needed for Australia to stay Australian. Time to face facts on energy. @Raymartin55 The usual farce. 'Warlike' OP boundaries are basis of Oz medals, medical etc. In 70s and 80s Australia there was no other IED capability than Army ATO/AT who did ALL the IED work. NOT active service. Later, you'd be awarded the ASM for a few days in a hotel in Dubai or Mumbai.

Defence warns we’ll “be left with no submarines if #AUKUS IS dumped”. The problem is that we’ll also be left with no submarines if AUKUS ISN’T dumped. Snookered by its own incompetence, with you’re paying the massive bill🤦‍♂️. 1/2 #auspol thenightly.com.au/politics/aukus…

@JaseJH111 @JacintaAllanMP No. You're wrong. The reason the other refineries closed is because they were old, too small and too expensive to be competitive with the SE Asian mega refineries. The two remaining ones are already significantly subsidised by the government, have been for years. It's economics.

@JacintaAllanMP And if our politicians hadn’t been such entitled and cowardly whores over the years we would have more than two refineries in Australia, be drawing our own oil and gas and providing it to Australians first. But instead you have all sold out to the globalists and plutocrats…..2)

A big thank you to the 1100 workers at Geelong's Viva Energy oil refinery - who are supplying around half of Victoria's fuel. Bill and his colleagues have been working at full capacity these last few weeks to make sure fuel is reaching our servos and powering our state.

@Raymartin55 @gasugasu1984 @VultureCapital1 I have an alternative. Give me $10m and I promise the Australian government significantly better subs in 40 years. 4000x cheaper, far better (world-beating, honestly), and exactly the same result.

I've been thinking about AUKUS and subs. We're seeing material threats developing suddenly. We need a rapid capability. This one uses existing skills of Australia's youth, home-grown manufacturing and content. It's a project that the nation can get its teeth into. HMAS Footlong.

@AlboMP I don't think so. We've supported our "allies" into wars in Europe and ME. It's too late to constitute a fuel reserve. We are at the bottom of the fuel supply chain geographically and about to see a restriction in Jet-A1 from China as well. Time to pressure our allies to stop.

@AlboMP $3.16 a litre for diesel. Well done, Albo. What you've created is a "no reserve" auction. At our expense. You can't regulate your way out of this, as you well know.

Our new laws to crack down on petrol price gouging have just passed Parliament. We're doubling penalties for companies doing the wrong thing. Because there's no excuse for increasing profits at the expense of Australians.

@AlboMP @PatrickGormanMP Thrilled about the AusGov moves on oil and gas. Now, speaking of fuels, how about you stop gaslighting the electorate. Diesel at my local is now $3.16/l. Yesterday, it was $3.08/l. Just normal price movements? You have no influence and no agency.

@DaveSharma Why would we? They're just doing what we and others do. It's called issuing a sanction. Oh, and BTW, given the proximity, it's a sound military decision.

Why is Australia refusing to condemn Iran for closing the Strait of Hormuz? Canada, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Finland have all signed up to condemning Iran’s actions and reaffirming freedom of navigation in the Strait. Why is Australia is totally absent?
Dave Sharma@DaveSharma

If the Labor government is serious about addressing the fuel crisis, then it should be serious about efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. So why was Australia not involved in this joint statement from allies? Did we decline? Or — perhaps worse — were we never consulted?
