@LordVulkan84 @AlexKheyman @HendrickD82 Well it’s just simply not as enjoyable to watch, if it was, it’d be the most popular. MLS can change the stakes all they want, it’d never garner more popularity

America's two best players are Balogun and Tillman. What do they have in common aside from not being born in America? They were trained in Europe. Anthony Robinson, trained in Europe. Serginho Dest, trained in Europe. Giovanni Reyna, trained in Europe. Pulisic is their biggest star. Trained in Europe from 16. Weah trained in Europe from 14. America's development infrastructure is massively lacking. It's not about "athletes", it's not about "it's our 5th sport", it's about the lack of proper development infrastructure. The lack of high level coaching. The lack of pathways. The lack of proper academies.

@Alikareem2469 @cdmusing @HendrickD82 Lol I don’t know what your definition of failing is but the NFL itself has 12 teams worth more than the highest worth soccer team, Real Madrid. I don’t think you truly understand the empire that is American football.

@AlexKheyman @cdmusing @HendrickD82 While you are right but it's going to be well calculated risk. With futbol being the popular sports and it being hosted every 4 year worldwide i think that's the incentives itself. Same with canada. Hockey an american footbal is a dying sports that so few countries partake in.

@DawgsandGolf @HendrickD82 That’s actually pretty funny lol. Fact is though they’re still worth less than every single NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL team and that’s not even accounting for the popularity of college football and college basketball and the advertising dollars they bring in. Too much competition for soccer

@LG___1998 @HendrickD82 Again, you miss the point. We are a strictly capitalist nation. That is our culture. If there is not enough ROI there is no point to invest. We have 6 other leagues/sports that make money hand over fist. Why invest into soccer when those are available and make you money?

Anthony Volpe said the organization did not broach the subject of playing different positions with him until Jose Caballero was coming back from the IL. Said he’d “literally do anything to help the team win.” Pretty passionately defended himself and his character.

@cdmusing @HendrickD82 You can't compare the World Cup to MLS. Americans also widely tune into the Olympics but everyday gymnastics, swimming, and curling aren't getting much play. Obviously soccer is bigger than those but the investment needed to be a better soccer nation is larger than the ROI.

American’s don’t like the sport? Only ~40 million tuned in to the match on Monday. Each game of the World Cup sold out at exorbitant ticket prices. I’ve seen ncaa soccer playoff matches packed and high school playoff games sold out. At any level, if there is an exciting product on the field and people are aware of it, they will show up.

@cdmusing @HendrickD82 Technically, yes. But what is the incentive to do all of this when the sport does not generate the type of revenue, in this particular country, that would justify the investment? The core problem here is Americans simply don't like the sport enough to do what needs to be done.

Seems like a fairly easy problem to start to solve. Work to put a better product on the field. Americans love sports. If there is a fun, affordable option, seats will get filled. If it’s USL, they need better marketing. IMO more clubs need to pop up so every tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 city has a club to support. Have to force competition to MLS to force change.

@CMacWFAN Chris, we all know where this is going. You can't strike out at this rate and win meaningful games in October. We're bottom 5 in K rate. It's embarrassing that it's been this way forever and we've done nothing to fix it. This team ain't it.

@YankeesStats @ChrisKirschner No, we're talking about the fact that he's not a major league player. If you want to player lawyer for Volpe, write up a brief. Can't wait to see what evidence you conjure up that says otherwise.

This Volpe second base story is silly. Volpe himself said over a month ago that he was willing to do whatever the team needed and was “ready to go.” Then a bunch of injuries happened.

@Keith_McPherson Of course it matters. It's important to make this an issue because the only way this minor league clown gets sent down is if the Yankees think they need to protect their little boy from the fans. Clearly his inability to hit or field isn't enough to send him down for Cashman.

@YankeesStats @ChrisKirschner In 2026 he's had 129 AB, is hitting .240 with a .338 OBP and .664 OPS which is just above his career .662 OPS. He also has 1HR in 129AB. Basically, he's drawn a few more walks this year. Bravo! Not close to a major league player.

@BronxBomberBall I'm sorry but your SS having a career OBP of under .300 is a major major issue and is one of the biggest problems on this team. The issue for years has been hitting and the Yankees continue throwing minor league players in the lineup who can't hit a lick.

Kay is getting absolutely fried in the replies and quotes, and deservingly so. Either he flew off the handle with a rumor he hadn't fact checked first OR (and imo more likely) he reported facts, something that Sherman independently reported as well - adding credence to the report - and is now backtracking on because the higher ups called in to him to do damage control. Also - Volpe sucks, but it's far from the biggest issue with this team. Why is he getting so much attention? Why is he the lightning rod for a team that is struggling so much and not the biggest stars and the highest paid players who are also underperforming?
Michael Kay@RealMichaelKay

I spoke of a rumor yesterday on TMKS that Anthony Volpe would not play 2B in the minors. Sounded unlike him, so I checked further today and there is absolutely no truth to it whatsoever. He never refused to work at second. Will speak more of it today at 1 pm @ESPNNewYork.

@rationalyankee He has a .224 career average and .287 career OBP. Anything happening to Volpe right now is on the Yankees for continuing to roll him out at SS when it's beyond clear at this point that he is not a Major League baseball player.

The Volpe stuff has gone way, way too far. He’s a 25 year old who is trying to be the starting SS for the Yankees. It’s one of the toughest jobs in sports. Granted, he could make it easier on himself by playing better. But when the media is making up false stories about you and reporting it because they know it’ll get attention, that means something is very wrong with how Volpe is being treated. It’s completely unacceptable for this to happen, especially coming from a prominent voice like Michael Kay.

@tartanmarvel89 You losers and cowards allowed Hitler to take over your continent before you were bailed out. You allowed an entire Holocaust to take place under your nose because you were too scared to get involved. Sit in your dome of cowardice and enjoy your soccer!

@HendrickD82 No it's not. This is America. This is capitalism. Money drives everything. What effect does it have on this country if we're never good enough to win the World Cup? Minimal. You want a better system? The soccer needs to start generating way more money in this country.

I've tried holding my tongue and focus on enjoying the rest of the World Cup, but I have to say that I don't care if people think it's reactionary or hyperbolic, I think U.S. soccer should avoid any future marketing of Christian Pulisic as the face of the USMNT. They can't control sponsors pushing his image, but I hope it gets reigned in after this. I'm well aware of his talent level, empathize with his constant injury struggles interrupting the consistency of his play, and understand he likely isn't going anywhere. However, I don't really want to see the guy in a USMNT jersey again. 🤷‍♂️
