The Food Professor

Much of the media is celebrating the first anniversary of Mark Carney as Prime Minister, suggesting his first year in office has delivered significant progress. The data, however, tells a more complicated story. Canada currently posts the highest food inflation rate among G7 countries. The overall unemployment rate has remained largely unchanged, while youth unemployment continues to climb. The national deficit has nearly doubled. Interprovincial trade barriers—despite a commitment to eliminate them by July 1, 2025—remain firmly in place. Our tariff situation with the United States has deteriorated compared with when he took office. Meanwhile, several of the transformational projects announced months ago have yet to receive formal approval. Either there is something I’m missing, or parts of the media narrative surrounding the first year of Prime Minister Carney’s mandate are significantly disconnected from the underlying economic indicators.

Another big win in addressing the scourge of intimate partner violence. Bill C-225 (Bailey’s Law) has unanimously passed the committee stage in the House of Commons. Thank you to my colleagues on the FEWO Committee for their work on this bill and to all MPs for their support.

CBC WHISTLEBLOWER TESTIFIES Travis Dhanraj exposes CBC’s toxic culture. He claims management uses gag orders to silence criticism and has a BLACKLIST of conservative commentators which are prevented from appearing on air. Institutional bias, bullying, intimidation, and gross misuse of taxpayer dollars in a public institution must be investigated. CBC’s alleged behaviour is completely unacceptable and we should applaud Travis Dhanraj for speaking out.

Free markets and free trade between free nations to lower costs, boost incomes, build new bonds with old friends, and make us stronger at home with unbreakable leverage abroad. Thank you to the @CPSThinkTank for hosting me at the Margaret Thatcher Lecture in London.

Honoured to share some words of thanks & blessings at the 33rd annual Mariners Service & Blessing of the Great Lakes Fleet. Our mariners are an instrumental part of out Cdn economy. Inspiring to see a mix of young naval cadets to more seasoned sailors. #BruceGreyOwenSound

BREAKING NEWS The Parliamentary Budget Officer has confirmed that the federal healthcare program used by rejected and failed asylum claimants is projected to cost over $1.5 BILLION per year. This is far higher than what the Liberals have led Canadians to believe. Conservatives forced an investigation at the Health Committee into the Interim Federal Health Program, and now the independent PBO has exposed just how out of control the costs have become. Rejected asylum claimants are receiving supplemental benefits like physiotherapy, speech therapy, and home care while 6.5 million Canadians can’t find the basic service of a family doctor. Canadians are rightfully asking why rejected asylum claimants are getting better health benefits than they are. At committee, doctors testified that under the IFHP, doctors are charging up to five times provincial rates. This raises serious concerns that the program is being financially exploited with no oversight. The PBO will testify at the Health Committee today. More to come.

After an audit of the Liberal's On-Farm Climate Action Fund revealed there was no strategy to achieve its promised outcomes, poor results management, unreliable and incomplete data, and exaggerated performance targets. And yet, this Liberal government continues to pour hundreds of millions into programs with no credible metrics, while cutting and sacrificing the vital, proven work of our agricultural research centres.

Conservatives stayed in Parliament until 1:30 a.m. to pass Bill C-14 and pushed to make Bill C-16 a priority. The Liberals voted it down — then accused Conservatives of obstruction. After months of delay, they’re now holding up their own legislation. Victims deserve action, not excuse
