Canadian MP Michael Chong is in Taiwan this week despite objections from Beijing. “Canada is a sovereign and independent country,” he said, and does not take direction from a foreign government on where Canadian MPs can travel or where Navy warships transit. Good for him.

I attended the symbolic groundbreaking for the National Afghan War Memorial last week. It was a solemn ceremony; however, more time was focused on the monument itself instead of @CanadianForces Aghan veterans & their families. We and the Liberal government need to do better. 1/2

Canada’s sovereignty starts with strength 🇨🇦 A strong Canada–U.S. partnership, a secure Arctic, and serious investment in defence are essential to protecting our future.

Conceptually, I really like this policy package. Pro-family policies must meet women and families where they are. That starts with recognizing that many—perhaps most—women today are marked by a combination of professional ambitions and powerful instincts as mothers. Longer and longer parental leave doesn’t really speak to these dichotomous pressures. To the extent that it provides choice, it’s fine. But it doesn’t fit the circumstances or preferences of a lot of women and in turn creates asymmetries in the workplace and at home. The three policies proposed here seek to address those differing treatments by starting with how professional mothers actually live. That’s a good basis for public policy in general and a modern, pro-family conservatism in particular.
