After 5 years since the last Halo came out, standards for the franchise have gotten so low that we can't even reasonably expect a Multiplayer mode to be included... after 5 years. Halo fans are not unappreciative, we just keep getting less and less. Every. Single. Game.

Halo fans are the most miserable, unappreciative fans in the world. And if Halo dies, it's because nothing will ever be good enough for them.

I am Sandy Petersen, author of Call of Cthulhu and co-author of the later editions of RuneQuest. To be fair, Call of Cthulhu is, obviously, a really good target for "theater kid" stuff. Angsty 1920s jazz? Oh yes. Better for their ideas than D&D, frankly. And RuneQuest, developed around a world literally designed by an old-school hippy, is ripe for their meddling. And @ratbitebaby is 100% wrong. I started roleplaying in 1974. My first game group (lasted til 1980) were all from the local university, which had and has a large theater production group (BYU). I can't speak for other groups, but ZERO of us were what you'd call "theater kids". One of us got a job as a NATO janitor(!); another worked in an alloy manufacturing plant, yet another was an avid deer hunter, a fourth was a lawyer, and so forth. When I started playing with "outside" groups mostly from California in the early 1980s, we also only rarely met "theater kids". By 1985, they did start creeping into my games. I don't know how many were in D&D by then. But they were not there at the start, and having met Gary Gygax, Jim Ward, Dave Arneson, and Dave Hargrave personally I can say they were the complete Platonic ideals of Not Theater Kids.

@LeadingReport At what point does it become a first amendment violation if the government strong-arms companies that control public opinion into censoring speech they don't like?

@elonmusk It's probably very sun-damaged by now but it'd still be super cool to one day recover it (if even possible) for a museum as one of our first intentional steps towards multiplanetary life.

While people will criticize and demand hard proof, it is not at all unreasonable to believe this given the political landscape of ~2013–2024. What we saw at its peak was people “canceling” everyone who expressed anything even slightly “politically incorrect.” If you consider that “canceling” in the workplace means losing your job, of course you would agree with all the terrible creative decisions your colleague (who was hired not because of merit but because of their ethnicity/sex) made, because not doing so would land you a visit to HR at best or cost you your job at worst. It is not surprising that most companies that hired people with soft skills to fill a checkbox on a diversity list continue to make terrible products.

Ever wonder why so many AAA companies make games with woke characters and story? Here's something I've noticed at the places I've worked.. In the early/mid-2010s there was a shift to DEI hiring, where a company creates goals to prioritize/increase the percentage of female/poc employees (I think both the left and right acknowledge this was happening.) With this in mind, companies usually first inject the DEI hiring into "soft skill" departments. "Soft skills" are skills that are easy to fake competence but difficult to master, and more importantly, difficult to critique. 'Writing' is a soft skill. Most people think "I can write a novel, it's just a story that you write. I can open MS word and type. I'll write a novel.", when in fact it take a LONG TIME to become a good writer. The same goes for video game writing. 'Programming' is NOT a soft skill. You can't fake being a good programmer (or at least, not like you can fake being a good writer). Interviewing/evaluating programmers is (typically) a very refined technical process, b/c game dev is inherently technical. It's also incredibly risky to hire incompetent programmers. This will break/delay a game and cost millions of $ in lost revenue. It's also the case that soft skills attract more left leaning people, but I digress.. The end result: DEI hiring (usually) happens more in the soft skills, because it appears to studio leads to be the least risky department to "diversify". If you want to add diverse faces to your staff portfolio, this is a great place to do it w/o risking technical failures. Once entrenched, the woke aesthetics spread into other aspects of the game, by means of thought-policing and toxic positivity (a story for another time). This is why very often you'll see competent video games (runs well, looks decent, fun) but with "modern audience" writing. The game/studio then slowly transforms into a hollowed out shell of what it once was, as the competent right leaning and non-political devs check out. Again, I've seen this happen at the places I worked.
