@OliverKamm @portraitinflesh Oh it was drivel, and very much of its time. But more generically I think there’s a role for humour. Have you seen Death of Stalin?

@AlexUlster @portraitinflesh That’s a perfectly reasonable point of view. It’s not a sitcom like the slightly earlier & flatly racist It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. But it’s not like the evergreen Dad’s Army, either. I can’t warm to it.

I actually think 'Allo 'Allo!'s core linguistic conceit is quite clever, as these things go. All that said: for me, there's no getting around the *fundamental* tastelessness of a broad, bawdy sitcom set under Nazi occupation. Just imagine if it had been Poland, instead of France.

I heard some people bad mouth Allo Allo. Amazing TV. My favourite character has to be Here Flick. What about you?

@OliverKamm @portraitinflesh It’s a really interesting question. And I’m not claiming to have the right answer. Yes, one needs to acknowledge the evils of history and trauma of people that experienced it. But still. I think humour has a role in processing that trauma and in weakening the power of Nazis etc.

@portraitinflesh @AlexUlster Yes; some 75,000 Jews were deported to the camps under Vichy. I can’t come to terms with a sitcom that treated the occupation as a laugh, regardless of the linguistic cleverness & fine actors (who include a close friend of mine, Francesca Gonshaw). I hope it wouldn’t be made now.

@portraitinflesh Yeah, that's fair, I get you. But ultimately, in that case one shouldn't make any comedies about WW2. Counter-point: better to take the piss out of the Nazis than make them always objects of fear.

#Syria: Justice in its rare ideal form. Muawiya was just a teen when he wrote the famous graffiti in #Daraa in 2011, for which he was tortured for over a month. Today, he attended the public trial of his main, hierarchically speaking, torturer - now the one behind bars. For more about Muawiya, see post below. Video by @HadiAlabdallah.

#Syria: after the fall of Assad's Regime, it was revealed that the teenager who wrote the graffiti "It's your turn, Doctor" - which ignited the first protests in #Daraa in February 2011 - took part in the final offensive. Muawiya Sayasneh was arrested by Assad's Intelligence in February 2011 and tortured for 45 days - hung, beaten and electrocuted - simply for writing 4 words on a school wall. He later joined Rebels in the province, before leaving for Idlib and then Turkey after the reconciliation deal mid-2018. After Rebels launched the final offensive, Muawiya chose to return to #Daraa via smuggling routes, just in time to take part in the battle to expel Regime from the province on 6th December 2024. He was then among the Rebels who entered #Damascus and put an end to Assad's Regime. #Echobox=1734266316" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">independentarabia.com/node/613850/%D… On the Southern Offensive (2024): x.com/QalaatAlMudiq/…

“Chornobyl” is the only correct spelling Ukraine asks the world to use. Using Ukrainian transliterations respects Ukraine’s language and culture and moves away from Russian forms that were imposed by Russia during the Soviet era. It is also part of a wider effort to decolonise language and correct long-standing imbalances in global usage. Using the correct transliteration for a place in Ukraine affirms recognition of Ukraine as a sovereign state – a fact Russia tries to deny. We welcome the decision of states and international organisations to adopt the Ukrainian spelling of Chornobyl, including in the UN resolution of December 10, 2025. Like Kyiv, Chornobyl reflects Ukrainian pronunciation and thus aligns with the global practice of updating place names for linguistic correctness. The successful shift from the Russian spelling “Kiev” to the Ukrainian “Kyiv” is a clear example of this trend. All Ukrainian cities deserve to have their names rendered correctly. #ChornobylNotChernobyl #Chornobyl40

BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Former U.S. President, Barack Obama: “We cannot launch military operations to get out of an ideological or technological problem. History has taught us that conflicts in the Middle East are easy to start, but almost impossible to end in an orderly way. We must recognize that peace is not built on rubble, but on a regional architecture that provides stability. We must choose between difficult and persistent diplomacy, or a perpetual regional war that has no winners, only victims.”
