@WomensHoops_USA Wasn’t the union around since 1999?? Why did it take the union over 25 years to accomplish anything?

@ProblemWright @MLBTheShow You want to know why?? It has the best offline experience of any sports game. And a majority of people play offline. Because people who play online are insufferable

@Alexe525 @6ffside Well if that’s the case there is definitely something wrong with the US. That is not a compliment.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti It's not the *only* measure; I'm fine with calling it a guideline, benchmark, or starting premise if that fits better.

Sportsmanship matters When the HOF voters have to consider Bryce Harper’s character, sportsmanship, and integrity, they’ll remember this moment; and if they don’t, I’ll remind them, because the internet is forever
Baseball@mlbelites_

I have so much respect for Bryce Harper. This is something you rarely see in baseball. After a crushing loss in the WBC final, Harper went out of his way to congratulate the players of Venezuela. One of a kind player 💯

@Brendan_F_Wendt @notgaetti It happens all the time, making wins useless. Nolan Ryan was once went 8-16 while leading the NL with 2.76 ERA. There’s zero reason to look at wins and losses when ERA and IP exists.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti Fair point. I don't think it counts for *nothing*, but it's eminently fair to adjust for team; Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young with a 13-12 record one year, since the Mariners as a whole were a disaster that seemed fair, can be extrapolated to the Hall of Fame.

@Brendan_F_Wendt @notgaetti So it’s a “rule” you’ve chosen to selectively apply, got it. Because Ryan only had 12 wins per year.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti He pitched 27 years, that's exceptional enough on its own, plus he had at least 3 years that were Cy Young caliber (one year in particular he just happened to have it the year of Fernando Valenzuela); it's not a hard-and-fast rule!

@Brendan_F_Wendt @notgaetti Yeah cuz he only had 10 wins and had an ERA of 1.97. Wins are an entirely useless stat because, as you accurately pointed out, it’s not the pitchers fault if the team is a complete mess. A pitcher can go 9 IP, give up 0 runs, and not get a win.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti I didn't watch a ton of Pirates baseball, but from what I saw he mostly pitched at a scary level; not his fault the other Pirates are a mess. Fair point, I get where you're going here and that's something to consider.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti In the modern game, where longevity is a factor, yeah that general area, with a provision for shorter careers that were more dominant while they lasted.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti And that has to be coupled with multiple Cy Young-caliber seasons; for that reason Andy Pettitte, though he has 256 (and is a good guy!), is rightly not in the Hall of Fame, his regular season stats are that of a compiler whereas CC had several years as a top 5 pitcher.

@Alexe525 @notgaetti (Not sarcastic, this is proving to be a good exercise in having to back up my position) For a recent example, CC Sabathia had 251; for a starter with that kind of longevity, somewhere around there. Would make an exception for a Sandy Koufax career trajectory!

@Alexe525 @notgaetti On stats, here's the best I can do. Albert Belle fell short of the 500 home run mark that's now typically expected of a corner outfielder, and wasn't much of a fielder. Curt Schilling just barely got over 200 wins in an almost 20 year career, averaging 11 wins/year doesn't cut it

@Alexe525 @notgaetti Bad selections earlier in history doesn't mean people have to keep making bad selections. But hey, I don't get a vote on these matters so I'm hardly about to start a boycott of the Hall of Fame or anything.
