Today marks Nakba Day, an annual day of remembrance to commemorate the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949 during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed. Inea is a New Yorker and a Nakba survivor. She shared her story with us — one of home, tradition and memory over generations.

@RyanScottND @EndWokeness Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolemy XII, a Macedonian. Her subjects were Egyptian and likely a mix of many races as Egypt was a crossroads for trade then. Ancient Egyptians (before Alexander conquered Egypt in 322 BC) likely came from Sub-Saharan Africa, as did most humans.

@RyanScottND @EndWokeness Egypt is geographically diverse from north to south. I’m Egyptian from Aswan in southern Egypt, near ancient Thebes (Luxor), which was once the capital of Ancient Egypt. Skin tones naturally vary across Egypt just like climate does —

@RyanScottND @EndWokeness So it’s completely natural that Ancient Egyptians had different skin tones across the country. Egyptians from the south traditionally have darker complexions, but they are still visibly different in features and appearance from many populations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

@RyanScottND @EndWokeness summer temperatures between northern and southern Egypt can differ by around 15°C. Egyptians are not one single shade or look; Egypt has always been a diverse country across its regions.

No they were not, particularly among the ruling class. "Genetic Evidence (Most Reliable Data) Recent ancient DNA studies give us a clear picture: A 2017 study (Schuenemann et al., published in Nature Communications) analyzed mummies from Abusir el-Meleq (near Cairo, northern/lower Egypt). It found that ancient Egyptians were most closely related to ancient populations from the Near East / Levant (modern-day Levant, Anatolia, etc.) and had relatively little sub-Saharan African ancestry compared to modern Egyptians. A 2025 study (Morez Jacobs et al., published in Nature) sequenced the first full genome from an Old Kingdom Egyptian (Nuwayrat, ~4,500 years ago). It showed the individual had mostly North African Neolithic ancestry, with about 22% from the eastern Fertile Crescent / Mesopotamia region. Skin pigmentation prediction ranged from dark to black, but with significant probability of intermediate tones. Modern Egyptians have more sub-Saharan ancestry (roughly 8–20% more than ancient Egyptians) due to later migrations, the trans-Saharan slave trade, and other movements. Art and Self-Depiction Ancient Egyptians consistently depicted themselves in art with reddish-brown to medium brown skin tones. They deliberately showed: Themselves as distinctly lighter than Nubians (who were painted very dark/black). Themselves as darker than most Levantines and Asiatics. Ruling-class and elite depictions (pharaohs, nobles, etc.) often used a lighter reddish-brown tone, while commoners could be darker. This is partly artistic convention (men often shown darker than women), but it also reflects real variation. Northern (Lower) Egypt tended to have more Levantine/Mediterranean influence and lighter average skin tones; southern (Upper) Egypt had more Nubian/African influence and darker tones." Skin Color in North Africa vs. Sub-Saharan Africa You’re correct that skin color varies significantly: North Africa (including ancient and modern Egypt) has historically had a range of skin tones from light olive to medium/dark brown — more similar to other Mediterranean populations. Sub-Saharan Africa has the darkest skin tones on average, as an adaptation to intense equatorial UV radiation. Some modern North African populations (Berbers, Egyptians, etc.) have lighter skin than many sub-Saharan groups due to different UV exposure and ancient admixture. The idea that ancient Egyptians were uniformly "coal black" is not supported by genetics, art, or physical anthropology. They were a North African people with significant genetic and cultural ties to the broader Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. The debate is often politicized, but the data points to North African / Levantine affinity for the core population, especially in the ruling class and northern regions, with increasing sub-Saharan influence in the south and over time." Darker Egyptians of today are largely the result of breeding between the original Egyptians and African slaves brought to the Mediterranean region through the early slave trade and expansion of the early Egyptian Empire through war and the taking of African slaves. One of the biggest clues is hair color and texture. "Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptian art, statues, and mummies consistently show the ruling class and many ordinary people with straight or wavy hair, often black or dark brown. Wigs were also extremely common among elites, and those wigs were frequently made with straight or loosely curled human hair (sometimes imported from other regions). Genetic studies support this: Ancient Egyptians had substantial North African + Levantine (Near Eastern) ancestry. Sub-Saharan African ancestry was present, especially in Upper (southern) Egypt, but it was not dominant in the core population during the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. This genetic mix explains why straight/wavy hair was common, especially among the upper classes in northern Egypt." Even when all soft tissue breaks down hair remains for many thousands of years in dry climates even without mummification.
