@MissLauraFong @policylaila @ZiaYusufUK You are totally free to uphold your moral standards, but that is not the point. The way Zia has escalated this in his post was uncalled for. And Harvey was justified in his reply back.

Harvey, I’m the mum of a 17-year-old. I know how vulnerable they are. You say you believed he was over 21. That’s your account. But what I find so disturbing is that you’re still presenting yourself as the victim. No legal argument or historical revision will ever persuade decent people that this is something to defend rather than deeply regret.
Harvey Proctor@KHarveyProctor

Mr Yusuf, For the avoidance of doubt, I pleaded guilty in 1987 to an offence of gross indecency under laws that discriminated against homosexual men. The age of consent was then 21 for gay men & 16 for heterosexuals. Those discriminatory offences no longer exist. Also, the individual who was 17 was ‘wired for sound’ by Robert Maxwell’s paper. He said on the tape he was over 21. Unfortunately, there was a lacuna in the law in 1987 which provided heterosexuals with a defence. If heterosexuals believed those they had sexual relations with were of consensual age, & the jury believed this, then they could find the accused not guilty. No such defence pertained to homosexuals. If the younger person was under 21, the offence was committed. I did not realise this lacuna in the law existed until my lawyer, Sir David Napley, informed me. I then told him immediately I would plead guilty. Parliament has since recognised that these laws were unjust. Under the so-called “Alan Turing law”, people convicted of consensual homosexual offences under repealed legislation can have those convictions disregarded & pardoned as part of righting historic wrongs. Also, what I did was neither gross nor indecent. It was done in private and between consenting adults. I have never hidden any of this. What you are doing is attempting to weaponise a historic conviction under discriminatory laws to discredit me because you disagree with my views, & blind loyalty. That is your choice. My point remains unchanged: politicians should respect the police’s request not to speculate during a live murder investigation. Personal abuse is no answer to a principled argument. You are free to criticise me, & to answer a principled argument with personal abuse & character assassination - however unbecoming - but personal vilification is no substitute for civil debate. Ann Widdecombe believed in decency, free speech & the rule of law - which is why she stood by me and offered me practical, private & public support throughout my ordeals. I rather think she would have expected better.

BREAKING RIGHT NOW: Ann Widdecombe assassination suspect is believed to have been caught researching Russian communist literature. I can also reveal Ann's WhatsApp was last active at 9.21pm on Wednesday, suggesting the killer took over her phone or that she was held hostage...

Agree broadly, but it doesn't help that we have seen people and groups allowed to threaten, intimidate and at times cause criminal damage and potential threats to life under the guise of free democratic protest. This is not just a left or right issue to be fair but there has been a blind eye turned to some vile banners, chants and protests. Free speech should always be protected but it does not mean free from consequences of that speech. Let's be honest groups like Hope Not Hate, Socialist Worker, Stop the War Coalition, Climate Change and unfortunately a lot of TQ+ groups have been emboldened to think they are above the law. Yes social media helps spread this and it would be a sensible decision to make online platforms publishers and therefore responsible in part for the bile that is often spread.

Sadly I think the way the world is now we do need to provide proper round the clock security for MPs, along with high profile former politicians of all persuasions. The polarisation of our politics and the depravity of some viewpoints, fuelled by social media, makes it necessary.

No advocating it, find it problematic myself but lets not pretend it hasn't and doesn't happen: Celine Dion (19) & René Angélil (mid-40s) Elvis Presley (24) & Priscilla Presley (14) Cher (16) & Sonny Bono (28) Bill Wyman (47) & Mandy Smith (14) Jerry Lee Lewis (22) & Myra Gale Brown (13) Melanie Griffith (14) & Don Johnson (25?) Demi Moore (16) & Freddy Moore (29) Charlie Chaplin (54) & Oona O’Neill (18) Humphrey Bogart (44) & Lauren Bacall (19) Jerry Seinfeld (39) & Shoshanna Lonstein (17)

Seriously. This is what we need even more oil on the flame. Yes there is a real issue with the violent language and actions at times towards Farage and it really ought to be taken more seriously by the police and authorities. But it is also important to tone down the heat away from the extremes on either side. That does unfortunately mean that some pathetic hateful abusive tweets or comments will be policed and will be prosecuted. Free speech isn't free from consequences and token often we have been tolerant to too much intolerance. So yet Farage and others need protection, online companies should be treated and punished for content in their platforms like publishers. But equally exaggerating the hyperbole like this is also unnecessary.

They’d secretly rejoice if Nigel was murdered like Ann.
Andrew Davis@andrewdavis2012

@AllisonPearson Are we going to see the House change during this year? That means someone like Nigel not being harangued to the point he goes and sits in the gallery. We’re told, over 1,000 death threats this year. The perception of Parliament has never been lower & that’s saying something.

@AliTimesTwo @policylaila @ZiaYusufUK Charles and Di didn't exactly work out. It's sick. My youngest cousin is the same age as Proctor was. The thought of him banging a teenager is disgusting but paying to bang a teenager?? My god!! Criminal or not it's just vile and depraved.

@AliTimesTwo @danwootton Surely it’s important to give the police time to make sure they have enough evidence to actually prosecute the right person. If they give out too much information too soon evidence could be destroyed or the person leaves the country. Dan giving out info could jeopardise the case

@MissLauraFong @policylaila @ZiaYusufUK To be honest, I agree, but I also know men who do the same with younger women. Be honest the age gap isn't that different to Charles and Di. But the issue isn't that anyway, it is the unnecessary regurgitation of this after he served his time, and now the law is equalised.

@AliTimesTwo @policylaila @ZiaYusufUK How old was Proctor? A middle aged man? Paying to fuck a teenager? If the age gap was as reported it's just gross in my opinion... And if true that he paid to fuck the teenager it's even more disgusting 🤢

@samuel_z1993 @Brumafriend @FNSWAY @PolitlcsUK Statements like, "at the moment we don't have anything but if we do we will let you know as we have an open mind to what may be found, but in the mean time we are investigating". How unreasonable!

Wannabe sleuths do raise some fair questions, but actual police work secures evidence, makes proper arrests, avoiding leaks that could put people at risk and possibly tip of accomplices. Counter terror teams now leading the investigation with new information, so suggest supporting due process to delivers better justice than speculation alone."

@AliTimesTwo @danwootton A lot of different sources to make sure we can verify what we’re getting. But having a go at the journalist just for relaying information isn’t going to help Eva the most important thing is to have transparent conversations to the point where all the truth is known
