BREAKING: Scientists Discover Exact Number of Legal Chess Positions—And It Has a Name!
After decades of speculation, a team of researchers at the International Institute for Computational Logic has done the impossible: calculated the exact number of legal chess positions. The final count?
3,479,247,346,952,187,986,658,124,183
They've named it “The Caïssan Constant” — a tribute to the mythical goddess of chess.
Using a supercomputer dubbed Capablanca-X, the team filtered out illegal boards with double kings, pawns on the first or eighth rank, and positions with self-checks. The computation took four years and over 38 million core-hours.
“This is the size of chess’s multiverse,” said lead scientist Dr. Eliska Novak. “It’s not infinite. It’s just staggeringly, beautifully vast.”
Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen reportedly responded: “Cool!”
