Had a go at making post and rail fencing from sweet chestnut coppice today. You see this type of fencing all over Kent and Sussex - chestnut rails shaped and fitted into morticed posts. Sweet chestnut is abundant in this part of that world and ideal for this kind of work. It splits cleanly, can be shaped to what you need, and is one of the most rot-resistant timbers you can put in the ground. No metalwork. No concrete. No preservatives. Just a method that’s been used for centuries to keep livestock in and mark estates.

As sec of @FOCRG and of Chislehurst Playing Fields Assoc, I was also v involved in working with @FElmstead to get the pavilion built. No LBB funding. It’s a community & loneliness hub that needs to stay open for the wellbeing of our community.

Saturday Walking Surgery 🚶‍♂️ Starting the morning off with our usual breakfast 🍳 before heading out along the High Street, Park Road and on to Belmont Parade. From there we walked Belmont Lane, Slade's Drive and Imperial Way, looping back via Woodside Avenue, Holmdale Road and Alexander Road. We also popped in to chat with a few residents along the way, with a stop for coffee ☕️ and cake 🎂 well, for Mike & Mark anyway, at Resta Coffee, before heading on to Royal Parade. Great to speak with people across the area. The main issues raised were speeding, rubbish, road signage and (unsurprisingly) potholes. Thanks to everyone who stopped for a conversation. Four years working with these two … with hopefully four more to come if Chislehurst kindly re-elects us. I couldn’t ask for better colleagues. We genuinely work so well together with each of us playing to our strengths. And plenty of Mickey taking of each other along the way!
