"Twitter does not lend itself to nuance or subtlety, but legislative proposals and clinical best practice are ill-served by simplistic sloganeering. So, let me optimistically use Twitter to try to unpack the conflicting views on the govt's conversion therapy bill. 1/20

Whether or not there is merit to McCloud’s underlying argument (I think there isn’t) is beside the point: that ship sailed in 2024 when the intervention appn was refused without challenge. (4/5)

This is mortifying. The SC explicitly addresses sport in its judgment at paragraphs 53, 77, 128, 232-6, 247 and in its concluding summary of reasoning at 265 (xv). If the Chair thinks that sport is irrelevant to the judgment, she can't have read it. x.com/treesey/status…

Extraordinary exchange between @Rebecca_SPaul and the Chair of the Women & Equalities Select Committee. The Chair doesn’t seem to understand that the @UKSupremeCourt ruling clarifies the position for women’s sport. Really embarrassing for parliament & committee clerks

@twanchovy @nytimes The enormity of what has been done and what its proponents are now saying out loud is perhaps so difficult to face, there is a tendency to think "there must be SOMETHING here". But journalists should be seeking the truth, not the most comforting spin on it.

@AlisonTunley @nytimes I'm less and less convinced by this softly, softly approach, presumably to try not to scare off the true believers. I think we're still giving too much power to a fringe minority.

In 2024, de Vries wrote a paper "[aiming] to question claims that [gender-affirming medical treatment] must necessarily result in “effective” outcomes in order to be considered legitimate and essential care". What a shame @NYTimes "The Protocol" never even mentions this. 1/4

Meanwhile, de Vries is given free rein to suggest that her PBs + hormones for children are beneficial if we are careful. Five years ago, I might have felt grateful for @NYTimes "The Protocol", but given the information in the public domain now it is woefully inadequate. 4/4

And it is @JamieWhistle who is berated about the distress felt by some patients at the withdrawal of this treatment, while those who misrepresent it as "life saving" are never held to account for their role in what has been an egregious misrepresentation of the evidence. 3/4

Another plea to people commenting on the #SupremeCourt ruling. Whatever your criticism, presenting suicide as an understandable response is dangerous & potentially self-fulfilling. Surely the one thing both sides have in common is the safety of young people affected?

Piece by Esther Freud in the Observer, defending men’s access to Hampstead Ladies Pond, and exhorting readers “to be kind”.

Stonewall & co's wrong advice to govt & society has hugely harmed women's & LGB rights & wasted £millions "But how do you put a price on ruining the integrity of a £900m national census that feeds into every strand of policy?".. @VictoriaPeckham spot on thetimes.com/article/5ebb0a…

Let's hope govt are paying attention: “This should not be seen as a zero-sum game between characteristics. We can and should collect data on both [sex and gender identity]. Acknowledging sex does not erase gender identity or vice versa.” thetimes.com/article/7c7de3…
