The EU's own Return Regulation, voted through the European Parliament in March 2026 by 389 votes to 206, now allows detention of migrants for up to 24 months and deportation to third countries with which individuals have no connection. These are the same institutions that spent years criticising Britain's Rwanda scheme. They have reached the same conclusion Britain reached years ago and implemented it at scale. Brexit had nothing to do with their problem and nothing to do with their solution. On Zia Yusuf's detention centre policy. The legitimate criticism is whether locating facilities for political purposes rather than practical ones is the right approach. That is a fair debate. But the LibDems spent the coalition years in government overseeing a system that produced the current backlog, opposed every meaningful enforcement measure since and are now criticising Reform for proposing solutions while offering none of their own. Charlatan is a strong word from the leader of a party whose answer to the small boats crisis has been absolutely nothing for fifteen years.
