Can kids get Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism? Yep. Did you know that bradykinesia is the defining feature. Vincenzo Leuzzi and colleagues address in a new article in @ParkinsonismD. Key Points: - The authors teach us that bradykinesia is the defining feature of pediatric parkinsonism. - Rigidity and tremor are common. - Postural instability depends on the age of onset. My take: Kiddie parkinsonism is much more complex and may have many more potential manifestations compared to adult PD and parkinsonism. We need to talk about pediatric parkinsonism 'a lot more' as the 'devil is in the details.' Current clinical definitions for infantile and childhood-onset parkinsonism usually defer to adult terminology which is not a good thing. I agree with the authors that we need a consensus on essential features for kiddie parkinsonism. Bradykinesia may be inconsistent with the level of vigilance, social and motor engagement of the child. Hypomimia and blink frequency may be a clue, particularly in infancy. Other associated features may include 'developmental delay, intellectual disability, ataxia, spasticity, dystonia and even catatonia.'
