My l friend and devout Catholic @breeadail taught me today that the Pope only speaks with that level of binding authority, as Vicar of Christ in the full sense, when he speaks ex cathedra, which means formally defining a doctrine of faith or morals for the whole Church. That has only happened twice in modern history. What’s described here is the Pope’s pastoral opinion and prudential judgment, which I was told Catholics are encouraged to consider, but it’s not binding Church teaching. Faithful Catholics can actually disagree with the Pope on political matters without being out of step with the Church.
Catholic Arena@CatholicArena

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has released a response to JD Vance's comments about Pope Leo XIV: 'For over a thousand years, the Catholic Church has taught just war theory and it is that long tradition the Holy Father carefully references in his comments on war. A constant tenet of that thousand-year tradition is a nation can only legitimately take up the sword ‘in self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed’ That is, to be a just war it must be a defense against another who actively wages war, which is what the Holy Father actually said: ‘He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war. When Pope Leo XIV speaks as supreme pastor of the universal Church, he is not merely offering opinions on theology, he is preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ. The consistent teaching of the Church is insistent that all people of good will must pray and work toward lasting peace while avoiding the evils and injustices that accompany all wars'

It’s not going to have any effect whatsoever—except maybe among Protestants who already have negative feelings toward the Catholic Church. Actual faithful Catholics don’t care what these guys say. We don’t take them seriously, and I would encourage Protestants not to either.

I could be wrong, but I think lefty bishops are overplaying their hand here. I think we’re getting to the point that most Americans are going to see this for what it is and it’s not going to push Trump supporters away from Trump. It’s going to push Americans to have negative feelings about the Catholic Church.

The Cardinal here says, "Our constitution." He is using his Church office to act as an authority of the Constitution. Worm-tongued. He's also lying. ICE agents have faced violent attacks. That's why they hide their identity.
60 Minutes@60Minutes

Cardinal Joseph Tobin criticizes the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign. “When they have to hide their identities to terrify people, when they can actually violate other guarantees of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, well, I think somebody's got to call that out,” he says. cbsn.ws/3Q8MaOA

@TaylorRMarshall Whats your grift? Why all these posts against Trump? When you have been just as critical of the Pope in the past? You feeling different? You doing okay?

@nosoup4knowles I do not know what negative word that would encapsulate what she is or doing, but it is do tiresome. She has her agenda (we know what it is), but come on. She is acting like the paragon of the Catholic mortality. It is tiresome. Speaking as a practicing Catholic.

Circling the wagon response by many Catholics is understandable, but unwise. The Pope is being very political and in a critical fashion. If he is going to dish it out, he better be ready to get it back.
Lila Rose@LilaGraceRose

The Pope has no obligation to submit to any political leader, only to God alone. Encouraging to see Pope Leo stand firm in the faith after Trump’s disparaging Truth Social post.  The Church exists to serve Jesus Christ, and has and will continue to endure far beyond politics.

The op is that Catholics vote swung big for Trump in 2024, and Leo is a Chicago Democrat. He’s creating strife and division. I will not play into it. I love Catholics!

@Liz_Wheeler The thing is no matter who it is, Trump always responds. He had always been known as the "counter-puncher." This time it happened to be the Holy Father. Which, as a Catholic, I do not disagree with what he said 🤷.

@JoeDanMedia The use of the word "fear" is a political tactic. Pay close attention to that and what comes of it, specifically who parrots it.

@RealFDAGirl @nosoup4knowles Ok. I am just curious. My SO and I are Catholic. I read the post, showed my SO, we kinda went "yah," then went to bed. I couldn't sleep, but for different issues. I didn't attribute that to the post, so I was just curious for our friend.

@Alpha_Paladin @nosoup4knowles I’m not sure, she texted me that she was having trouble getting to sleep because of it but didn’t explain why. I have very little understanding of the role the pope plays in people’s lives, so don’t know how common that reaction might be.

As a Catholic who’s been critical of Trump I find the outrage silly. The image is quite funny and the criticism of the pope, while it could be better framed, is not unreasonable. Leo has criticized Trump’s words and actions (as is his right). Trump has no duty to defer to him.
Piers Morgan@piersmorgan

This has gone down very badly with many of Trump’s biggest cheerleaders. He seems to be on a mission to piss off absolutely everyone, for reasons that are beyond my understanding given his current approval numbers.
