So ends another GDC. I’m very aware that I’m ignorant of many of the problems facing the games industry in the West. My entire (short) life in this industry has been entirely in Japan, with a focus on Asia. I go to events like GDC and it’s a crash course in the hardships and struggles devs there are facing. I’m not talking about massive 5,000-person studios, I’m talking about the boots on the ground making cool little games in their own way…and no one will back them. There are so so so so so many incredible games in development that I know you guys, the gamers, would love…and most won’t ever see the light of day because they can’t find funding. It breaks my heart. When I say “so so so so so” many, I mean there’s a volume of games you simply can’t imagine out there that need help. More than any one company can realistically support. Some will read that and say “just release it anyway”, but for many devs funding is essential to realize their dream. I’m in a privileged position to be able to spend my GDC time meeting friends and making new ones, while around me thousands of developers are desperately using their GDC to find help. Help that, if not found, could mean an end of their dream. As the industry continues to go from strength to strength in Asia, the West continues to stumble. I don’t know what the solution is and I don’t know how to help…but I return to Japan now more determined than ever to find some way to make things just a little less shit for the developers out there who just wanna make cool games. I'm sorry but if this is how you view remakes you fundamentally do not understand the purpose of a remake. Though I am new to RE, I understand being an OG fan of something and seeing it remade for modern audiences can be frustrating. I've watched countless franchises that I adore undergo tonal and gameplay shifts to keep with the times and it sucks. But the reality is we love those originals because we played those originals. And we played them when they came out or close to it. & the purpose of a remake should be to A.) improve the original and/or B.) make the remake more accessible to a wider variety of gamers, if necessary. Resident Evil Remakes are a perfect example of doing this. OG fans cannot seem to comprehend the general sentiment towards fixed camera & tank controls. YOU loved it and maybe still do. Alot of people do. But 99% of people in the year 2026 are not going to play a PS1 era game with a fixed camera and tank controls to get into a series. That type of game is much more niche than you think it is. To continue growing this franchise, they have to make games people are actually going to play. Capcom recognized this and figured out how to deliver these remakes in a way that respect those past games and keep a lot of the same gameplay elements but in a modern setting. I swear some of these RE elitists would rather not get any new Resident Evil's at all and at that point I question whether or not you're an actual fan.

"Chosen one" roleplaying games are so incredibly boring and I really wish we made a return to playing everyday plebs who build legends. I've never enjoyed playing as some destined hero, chosen by fate to save the kingdom or universe. In fact, I think the beauty of starting as a nobody, building your rep and then finding your crew is one of the best things about RPG's. Probably the reason I love the OG Fallout games and New Vegas, because despite having a background - you're still just some guy. I also love the idea of being someone who wanders town to town, growing your skills and unravelling the main story. I think Morrowind and Oblivion does this well, primarily because of the different guilds and houses. I guess what I'm saying is that I value games that are actual RPG's and not banal ego boosting "pick me" games.

So there are rumours of a Super Metroid Remake coming out but does Super Metroid really need a remake?? Its perfect as it is and for people that struggle with the controls Super Metroid Redux fixes those issues anyway. I heard years ago from a source(a bit of a mixed rep) that Nintendo were analyzing why Metroid wasn't more popular despite the acclaim the franchise has and they determined it was because the franchise had too many droughts and they wanted to prevent it going forward, I didn't think much of it at the time and thought it might just be noise but maybe it is true cause that's the only reason why I would think they would remake Super Metroid, to keep the IP in the spotlight because the game definitely doesn't need a remake.
