@TheSubparPatsby This is almost always true, however, I have played Dino Crisis 3, and that game seemingly has some sort of vendetta against framing jumps or action in a way that allows you to understand or deal with them normally. It finds new and exciting ways to fail you every other room.

maybe hot gaming take: i've played nearly a thousand games and basically never have I felt "oh the camera is really keeping me from enjoying this." Sure, some annoying moments now and then, but if it's one of your main critiques of a game, I kinda think ur a baby

@RobinPoedev I don't think it's fair to say analysis sucks ass because it doesn't choose the absolute most charitable lens to observe a game through. Is there a compelling reason the reviewer should have a burden to not care about the quality/depth of gameplay as much as the devs did?

As such, any analysts/critic of the ludology of the mainline 3d zeldas will be baffled at the drop off in quality if they arent trying to understand the narrative (first and foremost) and accessibility goals. This Is why mathewmatosis's Zelda videos suck ass (cept botw)

I think once you become a game dev you understand the insatiable desire to leverage mechanics/ludology to tell stories. thats how a very open gameplay focused fantasy about a hero saving the princess from a pig monster turns into a linear adventure with split timelines
Robin Poe 🐑@RobinPoedev

I think if you dont engage with the 5 3d zelda games on a narrative level youre left with mediocre experiences that are feebly imitating what alttp did in the 90s They just dont make sense at all if you disregard it, they would seem borderline incompetent and nonsensical

@LocalBtnMasher It's not "Lizardcube studio" announcing what game they want to work on like the tweet sort of suggests, it's just the one guy answering a question he was asked about what dream 8-bit game remake project in the vein of Wonder Boy 3 he'd want to work on.

@LocalBtnMasher Tweet has mangled this story. It's a 2018 interview with the director of Wonder Boy 3's remake (just "special thanks" in SoR4 and Art of Vengeance, seemingly has nothing to do with either of them) where at the end he's asked what dream 8-bit game remake he'd want to work on.

@JustPoorly @LocalBtnMasher You can aim at whatever you want near instantly which changes how you prioritize targets and makes shooting projectiles out of the air very easy to do on reaction, plus you can quickly aim to the side to turn far faster than you're able to while moving.

@IlIlIIlIlI24993 @RobinPoedev Most of the Metroid games have notable horror elements. At times, like often in Fusion, they are front and center, totally undeniable. People are just asking for the series to be itself, really.

@RobinPoedev Ngl i never understood this sentiment about metroid needing to be scary. The only metroid that actually scared the shit out of me, were the emmi sections in dread.

@JumpyFeller @RobinPoedev The tweet says "Lizardcube" but it's an interview with the director of Wonder Boy 3's remake, who has little to nothing do with Art of Vengeance, or SoR4 for that matter ("special thanks" in both of their credits).

@RobinPoedev I found their entry to Shinobi to be lame as fuck which makes sense when I saw them also say the old games aren't that great. So they made a pseudo Metroid where enemies don't do anything.

@DudeGlorious12 @RobinPoedev And this feeling is based on them liking a Zelda game that was a massive critical and commercial success in its time and for many years thereafter? You say this like they just called ET or Superman 64 or something like that a masterpiece.

@ThirstyyTiger @P_AllensProfile @jackcrawford__ It's a comment about the implicit views of a person that consumes games this way being in contradiction with their constantly reiterated stance that games are art. It's not a comment about whether the games they treat this way are art or not.

"are video games art?" is an invitation for people to try to convince themselves those who know the answer are busy talking about the actual art. those who don't know the answer but actually care to find out are also busy talking about the actual art.
Blitz 🐧@MechaGoddess

We keep having the entire "are video games art" debate every few days because absolutely nothing new is said anymore and nobody takes anything to heart, everybody wastes their time and sometimes it feels like the people saying games are art don't believe that in their arguments

@Bralef @CamelliaQuartz @RobinPoedev The only feelings it tends to inspire in anyone is anger at considering it art, or amusement that it is making the former group angry. No one actually cares about the work itself, just the conversation around it. Seemingly, it's only value is as an example.

@monkeydbum @RobinPoedev There are edgy low effort works deliberately intended to offend in other mediums and they're readily accepted as art. Only video games get this level of pointless scrutiny.

@LocalBtnMasher I get that devs iterate upon ideas and they aren't perfect from the start, but do people reallt think that devs back then had no sense of game design just because technology was more limited?

@Sakerift @TheRealRazzAce @LocalBtnMasher Given the expanding production times on games, increasing volatility of jobs in this industry, people from the early days retiring around now, and lack of mentorship like was common in the past, devs are overall probably far less experienced now than they used to be.

@bbbeloveddd @C1234Burnera @Pendragon776 So only freeware can possibly be art in your opinion? Or do the standard wage muncher games on console and PC get a pass for some reason even though they cost the equivalent of hundreds of attempts at an arcade game, paid up front before you have a clear idea of their quality?

@sadder_than_you I agree this mod doesn't fix anything, that's why I already said this mod doesn't recreate the planned lighting. I'm not speaking on behalf of this mod. I just don't understand the reverence for the state of DS2's release when it's clearly not even what the developers wanted.

@cheeseman64 You're playing at literalism now because you know your posts were just cherry-picking. DS2 doesn't need "fixing" any more than tons of other imperfect games. Plus, if some1 were to "fix it", it shouldn't be random modders or even random game devs - it should be the OG creators.

The tech-bro cycle is predictable as hell: early FromSoftware gems like King's Field I-IV, Shadow Tower, and Eternal Ring dropped with their signature janky, low-poly, moody-as-fuck first-person dungeon crawling, and the tech crowd hated on them with a passion.

@sadder_than_you When did I say DS2 was uniquely compromised to run on last gen consoles like no other game has ever been before? I don't recall that.

@sadder_than_you This isn't to say the planned lighting was without fault or that this random mod recreates it in any way, but to me it seems obvious that there was more intention and value in the planned lighting than what they were ultimately forced to release.

@sadder_than_you The planned lighting is what they wanted to make and had game mechanics reliant on it. The released game is obvious compromise for old hardware and quite ugly. I don't understand why you're so attached to the game's state at release as the absolute most artful way it could be.

@sadder_than_you The "ambitious real-time lighting dreams" got shelved so DS2 could run on last gen consoles of the time that it really shouldn't have been ported to, and with the lighting went nearly all the utility/functionality of gameplay features that hinged on it like torches.

Yet when it comes to DS2's "downgrade" moment (the ambitious real-time lighting dreams that got shelved for performance and playability), the push for RTGI mods flips the script into "this is what it should've been all along". That's toxic hypocrisy which poisons the medium.
