על מנת להבין את האימפקט של ראשית הטכנולוגיה של חיסוני mRNA מחוץ לקורונה, אפשר להסתכל על מחלה זיהומית אחרת. RSV הוא וירוס עם אימפקט תחלואתי משמעותי בילדים ובזקנים. לא רק שפעוטות בדרך כלל מתחת לגיל שנתיים חולים ומתאשפזים יכול להיות קשר בין זיהום זה והתפתחות אסטמה למשל. מעניין שבשנות השישים של המאה הקודמת, ניסו לפתח חיסון ל RSV אבל הפיתוח ניכנס למקרר בעקבות דיווחים על החמרה אפשרית בזיהום לאחר החיסון (כן יש מצבים כאלה והרשויות הודו בכך וככל הניראה אף החמירו) חיסונים שאינם mRNA אושרו השנה כנגד RSV! נוגדן מונוקלונלי (חיסון פסיבי) וחיסון אימהי. אבל ההגנה לא מספקת ונוגדנים מונוקלונלים הם פריבילגיה של העולם המערבי בלבד. זו הסיבה ש מודרנה עובדת על חיסון mRNA ואף כבר שלחה ל FDA ול EMA לאישור ביולי 2023 חיסון לזקנים כנגד RSV (עדיין לא אושר למיטב ידיעתי) והם עובדים במרץ על חיסון גם לפעוטות. מלבד מחלות זיהומיות, חיסוני mRNA נבדקים גם למחלות דלקתיות ואוטואימונית וכמובן לסרטן. אנחנו מצידנו חוקרים תופעת לואי חשובה של החיסונים הללו- דלקת שריר הלב, על מנת שנוכל לזהות אנשים שעבורם החיסון ב mRNA עלול להיות מסוכן.
