Just finished an unannounced visit to a state prison exercising my Senate oversight authority to check on conditions for residents + corrections officers. Our prisons are too HOT and UNDERSTAFFED. 75% of state prisons have NO A/C, which affects staff morale and retention. 1/ 🧵

Can a judge grant medical release when a sentence far exceeds what today’s law allows? For conservatives who value proportionality, limited government, and judicial integrity—the outcome matters 👇 @tolmanbrett @RachelWrightROC rightoncrime.com/why-conservati…

Planned tours are designed to show you what leadership wants you to see. Show up unannounced! Legislators need to dig deeper. I’ll be posting the full checklist soon on @FLPolicyProject , because you can’t fix what you don’t see.

Same for my friend..Florida has NO PAROLE…he is serving LIFE for daytime burglaries and property crimes.. in what Society does that make sense? 23 years now toward dying in prison…he is rehabilitated despite the cruel and inhumane treatment of @FL_Corrections and the corruption thrown his way..

@Kathleen4SWFL #Florida plz end natural life sentences for non fatal no physical harm crimes. My son's crimes warranted a prison sentence not a death sentence. Sentenced 1998 at 21 he's almost 50 now ,not same troubled drug addicted young man. Waste of natural resources, $$ & human life

Each of us plays an important role in protecting our water resources. With a growing population and limited water supply, it’s important we all do our part to protect our waterways. #NationalWaterQualityMonth

Capital Punishment in Florida Florida is ramping up executions—by lethal injection or electric chair—even as juries recommend life in some murder cases. The debate rages on, but one thing’s clear: killing people has never been the cure for crime. #AbolishTheDeathPenalty

Honestly, we’d be grateful just for a release date. A life sentence under PRR at 20 for a crime that didn’t take a life or cause bodily harm isn’t justice. It’s cruelty. It worsens overcrowding, fuels understaffing, and ignores #Rehabilitation #FLPrison #Prisonre
Jeff Brandes@JeffreyBrandes

In 1983, Florida abolished parole for almost everyone. Today, 1 in 59 U.S. adults is under some kind of supervised release. In Florida? Almost none. We don’t offer redemption. We offer a clock, a calendar, and a bus home.

You are so right. Here is my take on it, short version. "4. Change those statutes that can result in Life Without the Possibility of Parole (LWOP) prison sentences for any crime other than murder. The primary policy concern with the possibility or requirement of a LWOP sentence for robbers or burglars is that it strongly and wrongly motivates the robber or burglar to murder the victim in order to eliminate the witness and get away with the crime – why not, since it would be the same LWOP sentence anyway? A LWOP sentence should be reserved for murderers, not for the some 3,000 robbers and burglars who were serving a LWOP sentence in Florida as of January 1, 2023. The major problem with this plan? Florida has 100+ crimes with mandatory minimums. 95% of cases never see trial because that minimum hangs over defendants like a sword. Judges have zero ability to downward depart from the statutory minimum. That’s leverage by prosecutors, not justice by judges.

1/ All 67 Florida county jails have AC. State prisons? Most have none. We keep people in sweltering 110° heat until the air inside is hotter than outside—and call it “justice.” 🪡news.wfsu.org/state-news/202…

3/ Four men have already died from heat in a single Florida prison. That isn’t punishment—it’s a death sentence handed down by neglect. #FlaPol #PrisonReform

Because Vera Institute and DOJ research shows extreme heat spikes violence, medical emergencies, and recidivism. If you want people to come back to your community worse off, placing them in 110° cells is a great start.

A life sentence for a non-homicidal crime — not justice, not mercy, and not God’s will. We are called to believe in transformation. To lift up hope. To support rehabilitation and opportunity, not death by incarceration. It’s time for change. #EndPRR #FaithInRedemption.

@AlwriteAudrey I will not understand why many who were juveniles for resentenced and some set free while my husband was 16, now 56 and still incarcerated. It's unjust and unfair. Make me understand it because the parole system sucks!
