@Chieftain_armor @RyanDropek Translation: This reactor sucks in air for cooling and blows fallout out of the exhaust like Chernobyl on treads. Maintainers will have to set up NBC tents just to work on the tank since it'll sprinkle itself with so much radioactive dust that their grease rags will glow.

@dwbwriter Killed in the name of commercialization. And it was pretty far ahead. Because let’s replace a space suit that won’t be ready by 2024 (an already infeasible date) with a ✨commercial✨ space suit that won’t be ready by 2026 probably

@space_stations Pods have been proposed for underwater work but industry continues to favor saturation divers or ROVs. Why? You either need the dexterity of a fully articulated human for precise close up work, or you can make do with a robot. Putting a human in a can is the worst of both.

@spce_enthusiast @KenKirtland17 I hope they're cooking something, but I find it unlikely. They wouldn't be making it for free, and NASA would be an obvious target customer. xEVAS has an on-ramp clause for anyone to join anytime, so if SpX isn't part of xEVAS then they don't have a product to offer.

Trying to copy commercial crews success has really been straight up awful for the US space program. And even the commercial crew didn't even succeed in creating multiple capable crew vehicles for the ISS worst part is NASA is being left with no other choice given its funding

After nearly two decades, NASA's next-generation spacesuits remain incomplete. Today, the Agency continues to face delays and is reliant on Axiom Space to develop both the Artemis lunar suits and updated ISS suits. Read our new report to learn more: go.nasa.gov/4cGjdRT

@KenKirtland17 The SpaceX suits are (likely) not an easy band-aid fix to the problem. They were designed as spacewalk suits, which don't require any leg mobility. Those joints are part of why Axiom is behind schedule. SpaceX isn't likely to come up with an answer sooner starting from zero.

@Tygget @ThePrimalDino Apollo suits were custom fitted to the astronauts and were designed to be disposable. They're unusable for the Artemis program.

@ThePrimalDino Gathering dust for 50 years probably isn't good for them but I can't possibly imagine it would take 5 years to refurbish two of them But then again I can't possibly imagine why the axiom suits would take 5 years to be ready for testing sooooooo....

Genuinely what are they doing that it'll take them an additional five years just for DEMONSTRATIONS Might as well just yank some Apollo suits out of museums at this rate what the hell

From the report’s findings: “Based on our analysis, if Axiom experiences design and testing delays in line with the historical average for recent space flight programs, the Artemis and ISS demonstrations may not occur until 2031.”

@booster_10 I do think OIG is making pessimistic assumptions, but the potential risks they cite in their report are credible. The program was set up with over-optimistic goals.

@adampaulastro @Alexphysics13 NASA is an extremely tight position. They're building a lunar program from scratch on a shoestring budget. Between 1961-70 NASA spent $491 billion (2025 $). Between 2017-26 NASA only had $263 billion, not all of that Artemis. They took risky bets to keep this cheap and are losing

@canraptor_ The SpaceX suits can't walk on the moon. There's not enough mobility in the leg joints since they were designed for spacewalks only. They would have to redesign the pressure garment from scratch and likely wouldn't finish before Axiom

@Blaze_R935 @canraptor_ The Polaris suit did not have leg joints designed for surface activity. Those joints are part of what is holding Axiom up. I don't think SpaceX could finish a lunar suit before Axiom.

@adampaulastro @Alexphysics13 NASA needed to meet Artemis timelines and was just coming off a scathing audit by OIG about xEVA. They thought that providing their partial designs to a private company could help them control costs and meet their delivery deadlines. They were over-optimistic.

@Alexphysics13 Opening up suit development to be a commercial service will probably end up being regarded as a disaster. If there isn’t a clear market for the end product outside NASA, the logic for this type of contract seems suspect
