You’re in the wrong neighborhood or you have bad windows. I have lived in the same apartment for years because, for whatever reason, there is almost never any noise on my block. I lived in Kips Bay Towers for a few years before that. It was a great building (can’t beat that 3 acre courtyard), but every ambulance heading to NYU Medical Center and Bellevue came down 30th St, and it was intolerable.

I’d go through this with class action attorneys all the time. They would get a client settlement into escrow and want a laddered Treasury portfolio to max out yield. But if you don’t know when a judge will order you to disburse funds, you have duration risk. Those lawyers really didn’t like seeing client funds show market losses as rates fluctuate. It’s a slightly different scenario than what you’re talking about here, because those settlement funds always had to be in “full faith & credit” instruments, and deposits are only FFC to the FDIC insurance limit. Excess funds had to go into 100% treasury money market funds (which don’t have the best yields). But the point remains — narrow banking sounds great until you get into the weeds. There are more risks at the end of the day than are readily apparent.

There is nothing safer than an FDIC insured deposit. Period. End of story. We have a 90+ year history on that. FDIC has always paid out. The idea that a stablecoin is safer is rooted in the idea that it's reserved one-for-one. But reserves are not usually cash, so....

I've seen folks make the argument that regulated payment stablecoins will be safer than bank deposits. Maybe, but the devil is in the details. As @tphillips writes in today's @FintechTakes guest essay, the GENIUS Act currently contains some big flaws regarding the bankruptcy process for stablecoin issuers. Unless it's amended to more precisely define what a stablecoin is and empower regulators to place issuers into bankruptcy *before* insolvency, GENIUS Act-regulated stablecoins will not be anywhere near as safe as bank deposits.

@khaslett In theory, a #stablecoin could compete with a true RTP network if it had a leg up on interoperability, efficient delivery on the roadmap, etc. A big challenge (IMO) is a lack of court precedent for disputes. That could keep the big players out, even if the execution is better.
