15 years ago, the #Tohoku #Tsunami struck #Higashi-Matushima with unprecedented ferocity. Today, I participated in the city’s remembrance ceremony, where I gave a speech focussing on the loved ones lost and the tireless efforts of those who participated in the rescue work and rebuilt the city. The Embassy’s efforts to support the children of Higashi-Matushima soon after the disaster helped build a special bond with #Denmark, which remains strong even today. Meanwhile, a vibrant community has risen along the coast. Today’s ceremony was thus a testament to the dignity, courage, and determination of the people of Higashi-Matushima. Today, we all remembered what should not be forgotten.

By choosing to focus our efforts in Helmand - Denmark - amongst all allied nations, suffered the most casualties per capita in Afghanistan in our commitment to defend an ally following the 9/11 attacks. In Afghanistan I heard the screams of children, the sobs of parents, the cries of soldiers. And I buried the dead. May the sacrifices of the Danish military and civilian personal that chose to serve a cause larger than themselves in Afghanistan never be forgotten. Their legacy shall live strong.

I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela. The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. We call for restraint. The safety of EU citizens in the country is our top priority.
